Loosening of Office Chair Back
Admin October 09, 2026
Loosening of the office chair back can be resolved by identifying the cause and implementing targeted repairs, while daily prevention can extend its service life.

Core Cause Analysis
Loosening of the office chair back is typically caused by three types of issues:
- Loose adjustment lever screws: Over time or with frequent adjustment of the backrest angle, the screws at the base connection may gradually loosen due to vibration, causing the backrest to wobble and often accompanied by a 'clicking' noise.
- Aging of springs or gas lift cylinders: When the backrest springs become fatigued and deformed or the seals of the gas lift cylinders wear out, the support force decreases, resulting in a lack of rebound or sinking of the backrest.
- Structural wear or design flaws: Wear on the adjustment mechanism, material fatigue and deformation (such as cracking of plastic frames), or insufficient assembly precision (such as excessive gaps between components) can lead to chronic loosening.
Identification and Repair Methods
1. Locate the loose area
- Test the degree of wobble: Observe whether there is any abnormal noise when reclining the backrest. If present, it is likely due to loose screws; if the backrest fails to rebound or sinks, the springs or gas lift cylinder need to be checked.
- Observe the connection gap: Use a phone flashlight to illuminate the connection between the bottom of the backrest and the base. If the gap is obvious and uneven, there may be structural misalignment or component aging.
2. Targeted repairs
- Loose adjustment lever screws: Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the plastic cover at the base counterclockwise, expose the metal mounting bracket, and then use a wrench to symmetrically tighten 6-8 fixing screws (operate at 90ยฐ intervals to prevent misalignment).
- Spring detachment: Locate the spring pin at the bottom of the backrest and use needle-nose pliers to re-insert the slipped spring hook into the slot; if the spring is deformed, measure the original spring length and purchase a replacement of the same specification online (diameter 3-5mm, price range 5-15 yuan).
- Excessive gap in the gas lift cylinder: Remove the dust cover at the bottom of the seat, rotate the adjustment knob of the gas lift cylinder (black plastic part) counterclockwise, and test the rebound resistance in 30ยฐ increments until the backrest support force is restored.
3. Emergency reinforcement techniques
If professional tools are not available, cut a 3cm-wide strip from a bicycle inner tube and wrap it around the seam between the backrest and the base to increase friction; or use rubber bands to tie the movable joints of the gas lift cylinder to limit wobbling. Such operations can maintain stability for 3-7 days.
Prevention and Purchase Recommendations
- Regular maintenance: Check the tightness of the screws every quarter, and those weighing over 80 kg should check the wear of the gas lift cylinder every six months.
- Purchase considerations: Prioritize models with a three-position backrest locking function. Steel frame structures (such as those from Sihoo and Okamura brands) are more than 30% more durable than plastic frames; ergonomic designs (such as backrest zoning support and full-chair coordinated linkage) can distribute pressure and extend the lifespan.
