Drawing Method for the Back of an Office Chair

Admin October 19, 2026

The drawing method for the back of an office chair can refer to the following steps, combining structural design and detailed representation:

First, clarify the basic shape of the chair back. Draw a larger ellipse below the short support line of the seat surface as the main body of the chair back. More space should be reserved on the right side to leave room for subsequent support structures (such as the connectors between the chair back and the chair legs). Pay attention to the proportion of the ellipse in this step. Usually, the height of the chair back is about 1.2-1.5 times the width of the seat surface, which can be adjusted according to specific design requirements. If the chair back has an inclination angle, tilt the entire ellipse backward by 10ยฐ-15ยฐ to conform to ergonomic design.

The second step is to supplement the support structure of the chair back. Draw two short straight lines in the middle part of the ellipse as connecting supports. These two lines should be aligned with the short support lines of the seat surface to form a stable triangular structure. If the chair back is adjustable, add curved lines beside the support short lines to indicate the positions of the adjusting rods or gas rods. For a chair back with a lumbar support, draw a smaller curved protrusion at the lower one-third of the ellipse to simulate the support surface of the lumbar support. The height of the protrusion is about one-fifth of the total height of the chair back.

The third step is to refine the outline and decorative details of the chair back. If the chair back has an arched top rail (the top crossbeam), use smooth curves to outline its shape. The two ends can be designed as inwardly curled shapes to increase the sense of design. For a mesh chair back, use parallel diagonal lines or cross-hatched lines to represent the breathable structure, keeping the line spacing even. For a leather or fabric chair back, use soft curves to represent folds or stitches, with the stitch spacing usually being 3-5 centimeters. In addition, side wings can be added to both sides of the chair back, using symmetrical curved lines to represent a sense of enclosure. The width of the side wings is about one-fourth of the total width of the chair back.

The final step is to improve the light and shadow and material representation. According to the direction of the light source, add shadows on the left or right side of the chair back. The shape of the shadows should fit the outline of the chair back, and use light colors at the edges to create a soft effect. For metal support parts, use highlight lines to emphasize the reflective effect. For a wooden chair back, use gradient colors to represent the wood grain texture, with the direction of the wood grain consistent with the long axis of the chair back. If the chair back has a brand logo or decorative pattern, use fine lines to outline its shape to ensure it coordinates with the overall design style.
