Office Chair Back and Forth Swing

Admin October 12, 2026

The back-and-forth swing of an office chair may be due to design features or malfunctions, and requires judgment and handling based on the specific situation.

Some office chairs are designed with a rocking function to facilitate rest for users after prolonged sitting, allowing for slight back-and-forth swinging. This falls within the normal scope of design and does not require special treatment.

If the office chair swings back and forth noticeably, it may indicate a malfunction. Common causes and solutions are as follows:

  • Component connection gap issues: Office chairs are typically assembled from various components, and there will be some gaps at the screw connections. Moreover, if the chair has height-adjustable and reclining functions, to ensure flexibility, these gaps cannot be completely sealed, resulting in some swinging. This is generally a normal phenomenon. If the swinging amplitude is within an acceptable range, no special treatment is required; if the swinging is excessive and affects use, consider contacting the manufacturer to inquire about improvement solutions.
  • Loose screw issues: Re-examine the fixing screws of the backrest and base to check for any loose screws. If loose screws are found, simply tighten them with the appropriate tool, which can effectively reduce the chair's swinging.
  • Base installation issues: When the seat tilts forward, check whether the base is installed correctly. While sitting on the chair, the lever for adjusting the height should normally be on the right side. If it is on the left side, it means the base is installed backward, causing the chair to tilt forward. Simply reinstall the base correctly to solve the problem.
  • Adjustment nut issues: For executive chairs and other types, if they cannot swing back and forth normally or swing abnormally, check the adjustment nut at the bottom. Adjust the chair's stability by rotating the adjustment nut clockwise or counterclockwise. If the nut is already tightened to the maximum but the chair still swings, other components may need lubrication or replacement. In this case, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician for handling.
