Office Chair Arrangement

Admin October 12, 2026

When arranging office chairs, it is necessary to comprehensively consider height and angle, functional zoning and detailed configurations, and layout matching to enhance comfort and practicality.

I. Height and Angle Adjustment

It is recommended to adjust the backrest angle of the office chair to 110 - 135 degrees, as this range can significantly reduce lumbar spine pressure. Studies have shown that when the backrest is tilted to this angle, the pressure on the intervertebral discs of the lumbar spine can be reduced by about 50%, effectively preventing lumbar muscle strain caused by prolonged sitting. If the chair supports height adjustment, ensure that both feet are flat on the ground and the thighs are parallel to the ground to avoid leg suspension due to a high seat or knee compression due to a low seat.

II. Functional Zoning and Detailed Configurations

  1. Under-Desk Footrest Assistance
    Placing a 10 - 15 cm high inclined footrest under the desk (such as one made of memory foam or cork, or a 9 - 12 cm thick yoga brick as an alternative) can improve sitting posture. Feet can alternate between the positions of โ€œforefoot on the footrest and heel on the groundโ€ or โ€œwhole foot on the footrest,โ€ changing every 20 minutes. This design reduces the urge to cross legs and alleviates leg swelling, numbness from prolonged sitting, and lower back pain.

  2. Lunch Break Reclining Optimization
    If the chair has a reclining function, the following measures can be taken during lunch breaks:

    • Headrest: Add an oil-based memory foam pillow behind the original headrest to support both sides of the neck and the back of the head;
    • Lumbar support: Place a dedicated lumbar support at the waist to fit the natural curve of the lumbar spine;
    • Reclining angle: Adjust the chair to the maximum reclining angle (usually 25 - 30 degrees), and use a U-shaped pillow to fix the neck, a blanket for warmth, and an eye mask and earplugs to block out distractions, improving the quality of the nap.

III. Layout Matching Principles

  1. Leader's Office
    It is recommended to pair the office chair with a dark wooden desk. Dark colors (such as walnut or ebony) can enhance the sense of stability in the space and highlight the presence.

  2. General Employee Area

    • Aisle width: When pairing chairs with desks, reserve a 1.2-meter aisle to prevent colleagues from kicking power cords when walking;
    • Large office area spacing: Maintain a 1.5-meter distance between employees, arranged in a honeycomb pattern, with sockets directly embedded in the desktop to save space and facilitate device charging.

By scientifically adjusting angles, optimizing functional accessories, and reasonably planning the space, the comfort and work efficiency of office chairs can be significantly improved, while also reducing health risks associated with prolonged sitting.
