Discoloration of Office Chair Armrests

Admin October 11, 2026

The discoloration of office chair armrests can be caused by various factors such as oxidation, material issues, environmental factors, and improper handling, with different treatment methods for armrests of different materials.

Causes of Discoloration

  • Oxidation: Metal armrests, such as those made of zinc alloy and stainless steel, are prone to react with oxygen in the air, leading to oxidation and discoloration.
  • Material Issues: For plastic armrests, if the paint quality is poor, the paint is likely to peel off and cause discoloration. Inferior plastics may release harmful substances, such as plasticizers, resulting in self-discoloration.
  • Environmental Factors: Zinc alloy armrests that are exposed to humid, high-temperature, or acid-alkali environments for a long time are susceptible to corrosion and surface oxidation discoloration. Plastic armrests that come into long-term contact with substances such as oil stains, dust, and chemical cleaners may also discolor.
  • Improper Surface Treatment: Zinc alloy surfaces require treatments such as spraying and electroplating to improve corrosion resistance. If these treatments are improper, flaws may appear, accelerating color fading.
  • Coating Issues: Damaged, poor-quality, or mismatched coatings on the surface of stainless steel armrests can lead to discoloration.
  • Improper Use: The surfaces of stainless steel armrests are easily eroded by chemicals, and improper use can cause discoloration.

Treatment Methods

  • Zinc Alloy Armrests:
    • Prevention: Clean regularly to keep the surface clean and dry, avoiding the accumulation of dirt and moisture. Do not scratch the surface with sharp objects. Choose products that have undergone high-quality spraying and electroplating treatments.
    • Repair: For slight color fading, use a polishing agent for repair. If the color fading is severe and the polishing effect is poor, re-spraying can be carried out. It is recommended to send it to a professional repair shop for treatment.
  • Stainless Steel Armrests:
    • Treatment: Use a special stainless steel polishing agent to polish and remove the oxide layer. For stubborn stains, use an acidic cleaner (while wearing gloves) or a neutral cleaner for cleaning. Clean regularly to avoid the accumulation of dirt. Try to avoid contact with chemicals as much as possible.
