Office Chair Always Falls Over

Admin October 09, 2026

The frequent falling over of office chairs may be caused by structural failures, improper use, aging and wear, or ground issues, and can be resolved through emergency troubleshooting and preventive measures.

Emergency Handling and Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Immediate Disuse: If the chair makes unusual noises, tilts, or has parts fall off after falling over, stop using it immediately to avoid secondary accidents. For example, leakage from the gas lift may cause sudden sinking, posing a safety hazard.
  2. Inspect Components: Focus on checking whether the five-star base is deformed, whether the casters are fixed, whether there is oil leakage from the gas lift (e.g., oil stains at the bottom may indicate seal failure), and whether the screws are loose. For example, casters getting stuck in ground gaps or a deformed five-star base can directly lead to imbalance.
  3. Check Weight Capacity: Examine the maximum weight capacity marked on the chair's label (usually 100-150 kilograms) to confirm whether structural damage is due to overloading. For example, multiple people using the chair simultaneously or a single person standing on it may exceed the weight limit.
  4. Ground Test: Move the chair to a flat surface (such as a hard floor), apply gentle pressure (e.g., sit on it and sway slightly), and observe whether there is any imbalance or unusual noise. Using the chair on slopes or carpet bulges can cause the casters to get stuck and lead to falls.

Prevention and Resolution Measures

  1. Choose Certified Products: Prioritize chairs that have passed authoritative certifications such as BIFMA and SGS, and avoid buying unbranded products. Poor-quality five-star bases or gas lifts may have insufficient strength, leading to weight-bearing imbalance.
  2. Standardize Usage Behavior: Avoid standing on the chair, shaking it violently, or overloading it. Keep your body's center of gravity in the center of the seat. For example, frequent shaking can accelerate screw loosening and structural wear.
  3. Regular Maintenance and Replacement: According to the service life and the brand's after-sales policy, contact the official for repair or replace the matching gas lift (self-disassembly is strictly prohibited due to the explosion risk of the high-pressure nitrogen inside). If the gas lift's seal fails and causes slow sinking, it needs to be replaced promptly.
  4. Optimize the Usage Environment: Ensure the ground is flat and avoid tile gaps, carpet bulges, or slippery surfaces (such as ice or oil). For example, casters getting stuck in gaps can limit mobility and increase the risk of falls.
