Office Chair Adjustment Failure

Admin October 10, 2026

Office chair adjustment failure can be caused by various reasons and requires troubleshooting based on the specific type of failure.

Recline Adjustment Failure: The tilt of a computer chair's backrest is usually adjusted using a control lever beneath the seat. If the backrest fails to automatically return to its upright position and lock after reclining, it may be because the control lever was accidentally pushed into a fixed hole during recline, preventing the backrest from returning properly. In this case, pull the control lever out again, allow the backrest to return to its upright position, and then push it back into the fixed hole to restore the recline locking function.

Height Adjustment Failure:

  1. Handle Misalignment: The control handle becomes disengaged from the internal air valve pin in the base, preventing the switch from being triggered. Reverse the seat and check if the end of the control handle accurately touches the small metal dot (pin) at the top of the air pressure rod. If misaligned, use a wrench to adjust the position of the base's fixing screws so that the handle aligns with the pin.
  2. Air Pressure Rod Failure: Internal nitrogen leakage or aging of the seal ring results in a lack of supporting lift. If there are signs of oil leakage from the rod, automatic slow sinking when seated, or cracks in the outer tube of the rod, the air pressure rod must be scrapped and replaced with a new one.
  3. Mechanical Interference: Excessive grease or dust accumulation in the base obstructs the rebound of the pin. Spray a small amount of WD-40 or sewing machine oil into the gap of the pin and repeatedly press the handle several times until the pin can rebound smoothly.
  4. Increased Trigger Travel: If the handle cannot touch the pin even when pressed all the way down, attach a small piece of hard gasket (such as a coin or plastic piece) above the pin to compensate for the gap caused by wear and restore the handle's triggering function.

Other Causes of Adjustment Failure:

  1. Mechanical Wear: Prolonged use leads to severe wear of the adjustment mechanism's components, increasing friction. Regularly clean the adjustment mechanism, remove dust and grease, and lubricate with an appropriate lubricant; replace components if severely worn.
  2. Improper Maintenance: Failure to regularly clean and lubricate the adjustment mechanism results in the accumulation of dust and grease on the components. Companies should train new employees on proper usage and maintenance methods and establish a reasonable maintenance plan.
  3. Design Flaws: The adjustment mechanism's structural design is unreasonable or the material selection of components is inappropriate. Optimize the design and select wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant components.
  4. Improper Operation: Incorrect user operation methods damage the adjustment mechanism. Attach operation instructions to the office chair and have the company regularly inspect the condition of the office chairs.
  5. Product Quality Issues: Low-priced office chairs use inferior components. Companies should strengthen procurement management, choose reputable suppliers, and provide comprehensive after-sales service.
