Office Chair Adjustable Fixing
Admin October 09, 2026
The adjustable fixing of an office chair can be achieved using hose clamps or PVC pipes, with specific operations requiring safe handling based on the characteristics of the gas spring.

1. Fixing with Hose Clamps
- Expose the Cylinder: Slide the plastic skirt of the office chair down from the cylinder to reveal the internal metal cylinder. If the plastic skirt covers the cylinder, remove it first for easier operation.
- Adjust the Height: Set the chair to the desired height to ensure accurate positioning for subsequent fixing.
- Increase Friction: Wrap rubber bands, tape, or sand the surface of the cylinder to improve the grip of the hose clamp and prevent slipping.
- Install the Hose Clamp: Tightly wrap the hose clamp around the cylinder and tighten the clamp as much as possible. Test the chair height; if unsatisfactory, move the clamp up or down for adjustment. If the clamp slips, reinforce it with rubber strips or replace it with a tighter clamp.
2. Fixing with PVC Pipes
- Measure Dimensions: Measure the diameter and length of the chair's cylinder to ensure the purchased PVC pipe or plastic shower ring (which must be sturdy enough) fits properly.
- Cut the Pipe: Secure the PVC pipe in a vise and use a hacksaw or reciprocating saw to cut longitudinally from one end to the other (cut only one side) to form a hinged sleeve. Wear a mask or respirator during cutting to avoid inhaling dust.
- Install the Pipe: Slide the cut PVC pipe over the cylinder and use its elasticity to clamp the cylinder tightly, achieving a fixing effect.
3. Gas Spring Characteristics and Safety Tips
The adjustable function of an office chair relies on a gas spring, which is filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas. The piston rod extends or retracts by controlling the valve to adjust the pressure difference. High-quality gas springs should meet the following criteria:
- Nitrogen Purity: Ensure the internal gas is high-purity nitrogen to avoid performance degradation or safety hazards caused by impurities.
- Safety Certification: Pass EN16955 strength rating certification from third-party organizations such as SGS or TรV to ensure safety.
Precautions:
- Before operation, confirm that the gas spring has no leaks or damage to avoid fixing failure due to abnormal pressure.
- If self-handling is difficult, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician to replace the gas spring or adjust the fixing device.
