New Office Chair Materials
Admin October 09, 2026
The materials for new office chairs mainly include four categories: frame materials, fillers, fabrics, and accessories, as detailed below:

Frame Materials
The frame is the supporting structure of an office chair, directly affecting its load-bearing capacity and stability.
- Solid Wood: Commonly used woods include beech, oak, or birch. Beech is hard and has strong load-bearing capacity, suitable for high-end office chairs; oak has a beautiful grain and is often used in classical-style seats; birch is lower in cost and is mostly used in budget-friendly products.
- Metal: Primarily cold-rolled steel plates or aluminum alloys. Aluminum alloys, being lightweight and corrosion-resistant, are often used in foldable or mobile seats; cold-rolled steel plates are used in structures requiring high strength, such as heavy-duty office chairs.
- Engineered Wood: Includes multi-layer plywood and medium-density fiberboard (MDF), commonly used for the seat bottoms of budget-friendly chairs. They are lower in cost but have weaker load-bearing capacity and durability compared to solid wood and metal.
Fillers
Fillers determine the comfort and support of the seat and should be selected based on the usage scenario.
- Sponge: Divided into regular sponge and high-resilience sponge. High-resilience sponge (density โฅ 35kg/mยณ) has good resilience and is less likely to collapse after prolonged sitting, suitable for public seats; regular sponge (density 25-30kg/mยณ) is low in cost and is often used in short-term usage scenarios.
- Molded Foam: Formed through hot pressing in molds, it has precise and stable shapes. It is commonly used for the seat cushions and backrests of auditorium chairs, providing uniform support and is suitable for long-term use.
Fabrics
Fabrics affect the feel, breathability, and durability of the seat, requiring a balance between aesthetics and practicality.
- Leather: Top-grain leather is breathable and wear-resistant but costly; split leather or PU leather offers moderate cost-effectiveness, suitable for users with a limited budget but seeking a sense of quality.
- Fabric: Often made of polyester or nylon blends, with a wear resistance rating of 5-6 according to the ISO 12947 standard. Flame-retardant fabrics (compliant with GB 8624 B1) are widely used in public places such as theaters to ensure safety.
- Mesh Fabric: Has good breathability and is commonly found in ergonomic office chairs, suitable for people who work at desks for long periods.
Accessories
Although small, accessories directly affect the functionality and safety of the seat.
- Gas Lift: Used in adjustable chairs, it must be certified by SGS with a safety rating of 3 or 4 to prevent explosion risks.
- Casters: Made of nylon or PU, with PU wheels causing less damage to floors and being suitable for wooden floors or carpeted environments.
- Springs and Cushioning Components: Serpentine springs or individually pocketed springs are often used in sofa-type seats to provide elastic support; cushioning components are used to reduce vibrations and enhance comfort.
