The national standard office chair mainly adheres to the standard GB/T 14531-2017, 'Office Furniture - Reading Tables, Chairs, and Stools'. This standard sets clear requirements for quality, testing methods, and packaging and storage, and is currently undergoing revision.
Scope of Application and Release Implementation
GB/T 14531-2017 was issued by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China and the Standardization Administration of China, with the China National Light Industry Council as the competent authority. It was officially implemented on July 1, 2018. This standard primarily applies to reading tables, chairs, stools, and other furniture used in places such as libraries and archives, providing a unified specification for the quality of furniture in these settings.
Quality and Testing Method Requirements
The standard specifies quality requirements for office chairs, covering aspects such as materials, appearance, and structural stability. For example, in terms of materials, it maintains consistency with the technical requirements for materials and appearance in GB/T 3324, 'General Technical Conditions for Wooden Furniture', ensuring the quality and safety of materials. Additionally, new testing methods for impact resistance and scratch resistance have been introduced, size fit specifications have been strengthened, and physicochemical performance indicators have been adjusted to more comprehensively evaluate the quality and durability of office chairs.
Standard Revision Updates
With the rapid development of furniture standardization, the requirements and testing methods in the original 2017 version of the standard have gradually become outdated and are unable to meet the current testing needs of the reading table, chair, and stool furniture industry. Therefore, this standard has been included in the 2025 national standard revision plan, with project number 20250359-t-607. It is under the jurisdiction of the National Furniture Standardization Technical Committee, with major drafting units including the Changzhou Inspection and Testing Standards Certification Research Institute and the Shanghai Institute of Quality Inspection and Technical Research. Currently, the revision work is progressing in an orderly manner. The draft for public comment was submitted in October 2025, and it entered the review stage in May 2026.
