Making Office Chair Backrest

Admin October 17, 2026

There are three common methods for making an office chair backrest:

I. Repurposing an Old Lumbar Support Backrest This method is suitable for scenarios where you already have an old lumbar support backrest and want to reuse its resources. First, completely disassemble the old lumbar support backrest, retaining usable fabric scraps and cardboard as base materials. When making it, you need to draw a cutting diagram first to clarify the shapes and dimensions of components such as the front piece, sleeves, and ears. When joining, make small notches (i.e., cut small gaps) at the turns to facilitate keeping the fabric flat after folding; after turning it over, fill a small amount of silk floss to increase softness. Then, make notches at the positions of the front piece, back piece, and ears respectively and align them for stitching to ensure precise positioning of each component. Finally, stitch the front and back pieces together to form a complete lumbar support backrest structure. This method is low-cost but requires some sewing skills, and the comfort of the finished product is affected by the quality of the raw materials.

II. Making a Three-Dimensional Backrest Chair with Origami This method uses paper as the material and is suitable for making models or for temporary use. You need to prepare a square piece of paper and achieve structural shaping through systematic folding:

  1. Fold the top and bottom edges of the paper to align, forming a centerline;
  2. Fold the two sides to align with the centerline, press out the creases, and then unfold;
  3. Turn the paper over and fold the four corners inward along the creases to form a preliminary three-dimensional structure;
  4. Fold downward along the centerline to press out the dividing line between the seat and the backrest;
  5. Lock the structure by gathering upward and tucking the corners into the gaps, ultimately forming a three-dimensional backrest chair that can stand independently. This method requires no tools, but the finished product has weak load-bearing capacity and is only suitable for decorative or lightweight use scenarios.

III. Making a Backrest Chair with Paper Cups This method utilizes discarded paper cups, is simple to operate, and the finished product has relatively high stability. The specific steps are as follows:

  1. Processing the Seat and Legs: Take a paper cup, evenly divide the opening circumference into 8 equal parts and mark them. Cut from the marked points along the cup body towards the bottom of the cup to a distance of 2-3 centimeters from the bottom. Remove 4 adjacent legs, and then cut the remaining 4 legs to about half their length to form a seat and four supporting legs;
  2. Installing the Backrest: Take another paper cup, cut out a piece of arc-shaped paper as the backrest, and fix it to the edge of the seat with a stapler;
  3. Detail Optimization: Cut a small piece from the remaining part of the paper cup and paste it over the protruding staples to cover the flaws. You can also draw patterns with a marker or change the shape of the chair back to enhance aesthetics. This method is extremely low-cost, but the durability of the finished product is limited by the material of the paper cups and is suitable for short-term use or children's handicraft practice.
