Make an Office Chair by Yourself
Admin October 11, 2026
You can refer to the following two methods to make an office chair:

Method 1: Wooden Chair
- Material Preparation: You need to gather 2x2 wooden strips, 1x4 wooden strips, 1.5-inch plywood, 1/4-inch wedge-shaped wooden strips, woodworking glue, 2.5-inch deck screws, double-ended screws, a drill with a 1/4-inch drill bit, a jigsaw, and a circular saw. These materials form the basis for constructing the chair's structure. Different sizes of wooden strips are used for different parts. For example, 2x2 wooden strips are used for the chair legs and support structure, while 1x4 wooden strips are used for the seat and backrest frames.
- Component Cutting: Cut two pieces of 2x2-inch material to a length of 16.5 inches and two pieces to 37 inches. Cut the 14-inch 1x4 wooden board accordingly, splitting one piece into two long strips along its length. Precise cutting dimensions are crucial for ensuring that the chair's components can be correctly assembled and used stably.
- Side Assembly: Drill 1/4-inch holes halfway through the 16.5-inch posts at specific locations. Cut holes at the same spacing at the ends of the 1x4 boards. Drill corresponding holes at the bottom of the 37-inch posts. Apply glue and insert the tenons. Assemble all the components to form the two sides of the chair. The side panels should be flush with the tops of the short posts. Secure the 1x4 split pieces with deck screws.
- Connection Preparation: Cut and drill other wooden boards. Cut a 17x17-inch square from the plywood to serve as the seat. Cut notches in the corners of the wooden boards and drill tenon holes and pilot holes to prepare for subsequent assembly.
- Backrest Repair: Apply glue to the ends of three 1x4 wooden boards and insert tenons. Then insert the chair back and wait for the glue to dry.
- Insert Backrest/Seat Combination: Apply glue and secure the seat to the side pieces. Fit the backrest posts into the notches and secure them with deck screws.
- Secure the Apron: Glue the apron in place and slide it into position. Secure it with deck screws through the pilot holes. Insert screws between the seat and the back apron. Use corner braces to reinforce the connections if necessary.
- Sanding and Painting: Sand the surface of the chair. You can choose to sand the edges smooth and then stain or paint it.
Method 2: Simple Homemade Folding Chair
- Pattern Drawing: Find a piece of woodworking board, cover its surface with masking tape, and draw an accurate and neat pattern on it with a pen.
- Cutting and Sanding: Cut the pattern with tools. If you are unsure, pause and study it. After removing the masking tape, sand the edges until they are smooth.
- Hinge Installation: Assemble the components together. Use a hole saw to create small circular holes and install the hinges. Flip the seat over and continue the installation and fixation.
- Determine Support Points: Open the chair to find the support point marks. Cut two corner holes so that they can be locked in place.
