Office Chairs in the Indian Market

Admin October 09, 2026

The situation regarding office chairs in the Indian market can be understood from three aspects: regulations, market opportunities, and exhibitions:

Regulatory Requirements: On February 13, 2025, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) of India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry officially issued the Furniture Quality Control Order 2025 (Furniture QCO 2025), stipulating that office chairs must comply with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) regulations. From that date, office chairs without BIS certification and the ISI mark are prohibited from being imported, cleared through customs, and sold. Otherwise, they will face penalties such as cargo detention, fines, and seizure. The policy sets differentiated transition periods for different types of enterprises: Indian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are granted a six-month grace period until August 13, 2026; while Chinese export enterprises have no grace period and must complete compliance certification by February 13, 2026. This policy imposes strict time requirements on export enterprises, necessitating early planning of the certification process to avoid market access risks.

Market Opportunities: India's sustained economic growth and accelerated urbanization are driving the expansion of commercial real estate, creating significant demand in the office chair market. According to data from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), in 2024, the vacancy rate of office buildings in India dropped to 12%, and the area of newly built office spaces in core cities such as Bangalore and Mumbai increased by 23% year-on-year. At the same time, the localization strategies of multinational corporations and the expansion of local start-ups are further stimulating demand for modern and intelligent office furniture. It is estimated that the Indian office furniture market will exceed $5 billion in size by 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of 8.5%, making it one of the fastest-growing markets globally. Among them, high-end products such as ergonomic chairs and smart office chairs are seeing particularly prominent demand growth due to their alignment with the trend of healthy office work.

Exhibition Information: From December 4 to 6, 2025, the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai, India, will host the largest professional exhibition in South Asiaโ€”the 2025 India Office Furniture Expo (India Office Furniture Expo 2025). This edition of the exhibition is expected to attract more than 500 exhibitors from over 30 countries and regions worldwide, focusing on showcasing cutting-edge designs, materials, and technologies in the office furniture field. The exhibition will feature a dedicated Smart Office Solutions Zone, displaying products such as height-adjustable desks and IoT-integrated ergonomic chairs that support remote control and health management functions. This platform provides opportunities for domestic and foreign enterprises for technology exchange, brand promotion, and business cooperation, helping them grasp the consumption trends of intelligence and health in the Indian market.
