IKEA Office Chair Oil Leakage

Admin October 12, 2026

Oil leakage in IKEA office chairs may be caused by issues with the hydraulic oil pump, equipment aging, improper maintenance, or inherent quality problems of the equipment. It is recommended to contact after-sales service or professional maintenance personnel based on the warranty status.

Hydraulic Oil Pump-Related Issues

The hydraulic oil pump is the core component of the office chair's height adjustment function, with a complex internal structure that includes key components such as oil inlet and outlet pipe fittings, O-rings, and seals. If these components have defects, such as loose installation of the oil inlet and outlet pipe fittings, aging and deformation of the O-rings, or damage to the seals, hydraulic oil can seep out through the gaps. Additionally, a decrease in the sealing between the piston and cylinder inside the pump can also trigger oil leakage. These issues are usually related to manufacturing processes or long-term wear and tear, requiring a focus on inspecting the pump's connection points and seal conditions.

Equipment Aging Factors

When an office chair has been in use for a long time, the housing may deform due to external impacts or material fatigue, leading to abnormal pressure distribution within the hydraulic system and subsequent oil leakage. At the same time, plastic oil pipes may gradually age and become brittle after prolonged exposure to hydraulic oil corrosion and temperature changes, eventually rupturing and causing oil leakage. Such problems are more common in office chairs that have been used for over five years and can be initially judged by observing the housing's appearance and the integrity of the oil pipes.

Improper Maintenance Operations

If users have replaced the hydraulic oil or disassembled the pump themselves, improper operations may lead to oil leakage. For example, using hydraulic oil that does not meet specifications can corrode the seals, while misaligned threads or loose components during assembly can also damage the original sealing structure. Additionally, using the chair without conducting a pressure test after maintenance may result in undetected potential oil leakage points.

Equipment Quality Defects

Some low-priced office chairs may have missing seal designs or casting process defects, such as sand holes in the pump housing or dimensional deviations in the seal grooves. These issues are present from the factory but may not be apparent initially due to low usage pressure, gradually becoming evident over time. Choosing reputable brands when purchasing can reduce such risks.

Handling Recommendations: If the chair is still under warranty, immediately contact IKEA after-sales service or the manufacturer to arrange for repairs, avoiding self-disassembly that may void the warranty. If the warranty has expired, consider replacing the seals or pump based on the location of the oil leakage, and for complex cases, it is advisable to entrust the repair to professional maintenance personnel.
