How to Remove an Office Chair
Admin October 09, 2026
Removing an office chair usually requires selecting the appropriate method based on its specific type and structure. The common steps are as follows:

I. Removing the Gas Cylinder (for chairs with pneumatic height adjustment)
- Tool Preparation: Use a specialized plier (some chairs may require matching tools) or an adjustable pipe wrench to ensure a firm grip on the gas cylinder.
- Operation Steps:
- Invert the chair so that the base faces upwards, exposing the connection between the gas cylinder and the base.
- Use the plier to grip the metal part at the bottom of the gas cylinder (near the base) and rotate or pull it up and down forcefully. Some gas cylinders may require pressing the release button on the top simultaneously.
- If the gas cylinder is rusted or stuck, spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) to assist in removal.
- Note: The gas cylinder contains high-pressure gas. Avoid striking it violently during removal to prevent accidental ejection.
II. Disassembling the Base (for chairs with fixed or detachable bases)
- Check the Connection Method:
- Screw-fixed: Use a screwdriver or power tool to unscrew the screws connecting the base to the seat and the gas cylinder (usually located under the seat or at the edge of the base).
- Snap-fit: Some chair bases are fixed with plastic snaps. Use a flat tool (such as a screwdriver) to gently pry the edge of the snap to separate the base from the seat.
- Separate Components:
- After removing the base, if further disassembly of the wheels or central shaft is required, use a wrench to unscrew the wheel fixing screws or directly pull out the wheels (some wheels are snap-fit designs).
- Tip: Keep all screws and small parts to avoid loss.
III. Handling Special Cases
- Replacing the Base of a Lift Chair/Swivel Chair:
- Refer to specialized tutorials. Usually, you need to remove the seat first, then separate the gas cylinder from the base, and finally install the new base and reassemble.
- Key Point: Ensure that the new base matches the model of the gas cylinder to avoid unstable installation.
- Converting a Car Seat into an Office Chair:
- Confirm the compatibility between the car seat base and the office chair bracket (such as hole spacing and size), and verify whether the conversion source complies with regulations (avoid damaging the original car structure or violating safety standards).
- Suggestion: Prioritize the use of specialized office chair accessories. Conversion should be carried out by professionals.
Safety Tips: Wear gloves before disassembly to prevent scratches. If the chair structure is complex or you are unsure of the disassembly method, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer or a professional repair technician to avoid damaging components or causing safety hazards.
