How to Recline an Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

There are mainly three ways to recline an office chair: adjusting the backrest angle, purchasing a professional adjustable office/lunch break chair, and adding accessories to a reclining office chair.

Adjusting the backrest angle: This is a relatively common and straightforward method, but it requires that the office chair has a reclining function. Typically, there is a button on the office chair to control the adjustment of the backrest. When you push the button inwards, the chair is in a locked state, and at this time, you can only adjust the height of the seat up and down. Pulling the button outwards unlocks the chair, and after unlocking, the user can adjust the seat to the desired reclining angle according to their needs. Once adjusted to the appropriate angle, push the button inwards again to lock the backrest and maintain that angle. Some high-end office chairs have a large range of backrest adjustment, supporting infinite adjustment from 95 degrees to 160 degrees. When you need to fully recline and relax, pull out the footrest and activate the 160-degree lie-flat mode to allow your body to stretch fully.

Purchasing a professional adjustable office/lunch break chair: There are specially designed "reclining desk chairs" or "sit-and-recline chairs" on the market. These chairs are designed with the user's need to recline and rest in mind. When in use, simply pull the lever on the side, and the backrest will recline backward. At the same time, the folded footrest at the bottom will automatically extend to provide support for the legs. Some models are also equipped with a hidden headrest to better support the head. Moreover, some high-end smart models even support one-touch switching, making the operation more convenient. In just a few seconds, the chair can be transformed into a comfortable recliner.

Adding accessories to a reclining office chair: For ordinary office chairs with a reclining function (usually with a reclining angle of 25 - 30 degrees), although their own reclining angle is limited, adding some accessories can also achieve a good reclining and resting effect. For example, adding a U-shaped memory foam pillow behind the headrest can provide good support for the neck and head, reducing neck pressure. Adding a lumbar support behind the waist can provide strong support for the lumbar spine and maintain the natural curve of the spine. During the lunch break, recline the chair to the maximum angle, cover your legs with a blanket, and wear an eye mask and earplugs to create a relatively comfortable semi-reclining resting environment.
