How to Prevent Office Chair from Rotating

Admin October 19, 2026

To prevent an office chair from rotating, you can use the following methods, which are divided into temporary measures and long-term solutions:

1. Fix the Seat Structure If the chair design allows, you can fix the seat to the base with screws to eliminate the relative movement of the rotating parts. This method requires removing the bottom shell of the seat, locating the screws connecting the seat to the rotating shaft, and tightening them. It is suitable for swivel chairs with a detachable structure. Be sure to confirm the screw specifications before operation to avoid damaging the components.

2. Physically Limit the Rotation Space Place rubber pads, wooden blocks, or anti-slip stickers on the contact surface between the bottom of the seat and the base to restrict rotation by increasing friction or providing physical barriers. For example, cutting a rubber pad into a circular shape that matches the diameter of the base and sticking it around the rotating shaft can effectively reduce the rotation range. This method is low-cost but may affect the chair's aesthetics.

3. Replace with a Non-Rotating Base If the base of the swivel chair is detachable, you can purchase a fixed base for replacement. Fixed bases are usually made of metal or hard plastic and have no rotating mechanism. They can be directly connected to the seat with screws. Before replacement, ensure that the interface size of the base matches that of the original chair to avoid compatibility issues.

4. Lock the Wheel Function Some office chairs are equipped with a wheel-locking device. You can fix the wheels by flipping the bottom switch to the โ€œLOCKโ€ position. If the chair does not have this function, you can purchase universal wheels with a brake function separately to replace the original wheels. When installing, measure the wheel diameter, axle hole size, and brake type (such as gravity sensing or manual locking). After replacement, test the brake stability to ensure safety.

5. Adjust the Ground Friction Lay anti-slip mats, thick carpets, or rubber mats under the wheels to restrict the chair's movement by increasing ground friction. This method is highly effective if the ground is smooth tile or wooden flooring. If the ground already has high friction (such as short-pile carpets), you may need to combine it with other methods. Regularly clean debris between the anti-slip mats and the wheels to avoid jamming.

6. Long-Term Solution: Replace with a Specialized Chair If you need to completely solve the rotation problem, you can directly purchase an office chair with gravity-activated casters or a fixed function. Gravity-activated casters automatically lock when unoccupied and unlock for movement when someone sits on them. Fixed-function chairs completely eliminate the rotating design and are suitable for scenarios requiring a stable sitting position. When selecting, pay attention to the chair's weight capacity, material, and ergonomic design to ensure comfort and durability.

Temporary measures (such as physical barriers and increasing friction) are suitable for short-term use. For long-term use, it is recommended to choose fixing the seat structure, replacing the base, or using a specialized chair to balance safety and practicality. Before operation, carefully read the chair's instruction manual to avoid voiding the warranty or damaging the structure due to disassembly.
