How to Prevent Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 14, 2026

Preventing office chair explosions requires comprehensive control from three aspects: the selection of gas springs, the installation of explosion-proof steel plates, and standardized usage.

I. Selecting Qualified Gas Springs

  1. Check Certifications and Stamps: Legitimate gas springs should have the manufacturer's logo and international safety certification stamps such as SGS and BIFMA marked on the body. Products without identification, known as "three-no" products, pose a high risk and should be excluded directly.
  2. Pay Attention to Gas Spring Grades: The industry distinguishes grades as "Grade III" and "Grade IV". Grade IV gas springs have thicker walls, stronger pressure-bearing capacity, and longer lifespans. When the budget allows, prioritize selecting Grade IV.
  3. Beware of Excessively Low Prices: High-quality gas springs have relatively high costs. If the market price is significantly lower than the normal level, there may be issues of shoddy workmanship and materials, requiring careful purchase.

II. Ensuring the Installation of Explosion-Proof Steel Plates
According to national standards, an explosion-proof isolation steel plate with a thickness of no less than 2 millimeters must be installed between the gas spring and the seat surface as a secondary safety barrier. This steel plate can prevent fragments from directly impacting the human body in the event of a gas spring explosion. However, it should be noted that its role is auxiliary, and the core safety still depends on the quality of the gas spring itself. If the thickness of the steel plate is insufficient or the installation is not standardized, the protective effect will be greatly reduced.

III. Understanding Explosion Causes and Using the Chair Properly

  1. Avoid Impure Gases: Inferior gas springs may use compressed air or oxygen mixtures instead of pure nitrogen. Oxygen is prone to oxidation under high temperatures or friction, leading to a sudden increase in internal pressure. Choose products labeled as "filled with pure nitrogen" and avoid prolonged use in high-temperature environments (such as direct sunlight or near heating sources).
  2. Avoid Shoddy Workmanship in Tube Walls: Gas springs with excessively thin walls (much less than 2mm), rough welds, or inadequate heat treatment are prone to explosion under long-term high pressure. When purchasing, observe the appearance of the gas spring and choose products with uniform tube walls and no welding marks.
  3. Avoid Poor Sealing: Poor sealing can lead to gas leakage or sudden ejection. When purchasing, gently shake the gas spring to check for any air leakage sounds or choose products with sealing inspection reports.
  4. Avoid Frequent Lifting and Overheating: Rapid and frequent lifting can intensify internal friction, generate high temperatures, and accelerate material aging. It is recommended to have an interval of no less than 5 seconds between single liftings and avoid continuous operation more than 10 times. At the same time, avoid prolonged sitting pressure that can cause local overheating, and take regular breaks to move around.

By implementing these measures, the risk of explosion of the gas spring in an office chair can be significantly reduced, ensuring safety during use.
