How to Lower Office Chairs

Admin October 14, 2026

The method for lowering office chairs depends on their type. Here are the specific steps:

I. Lowering Methods for Adjustable-Height Office Chairs

  1. Conventional Lifting Mechanism

    • Lever/Handle Operation: Sit on the chair, pull the lever under the seat or pull the handle downward. Use your body weight to lower the chair, and release it to lock the height. For some chairs, you may need to slightly press down on the seat while pulling the lever to trigger the lowering mechanism.
    • Support Rod Handle Operation: Locate the handle on the seat support rod (usually under the seat or on the side). While sitting on the chair or pressing down on the seat with your hand, lift the handle to lower the chair. The height will automatically lock when you release the handle.
  2. Pneumatic Lifting Mechanism

    • Find the knob at the top of the gas cylinder and turn it clockwise to lower the chair height. Pneumatic gas cylinders adjust the height by regulating internal air pressure. When turning, maintain even pressure to avoid damaging the gas cylinder due to excessive force.

II. Lowering Methods for Fixed-Height Office Chairs

If the chair does not have a height-adjustment function, choose a solution based on the degree of height deviation:

  1. Minor Height Adjustment (a few millimeters to 1 centimeter)

    • Install Adjustable Foot Pads: Install non-slip foot pads at the four corners of the chair base and adjust the height by rotating the foot pads. This method is suitable for situations where the floor is uneven or the chair is slightly higher than needed.
  2. Significant Height Adjustment (more than 1 centimeter)

    • Replace the Gas Cylinder: If a fixed-height chair is too high due to an aging or poorly designed gas cylinder, you need to replace the gas cylinder. The steps are as follows:
      • Remove the Old Gas Cylinder: Turn the chair upside down. Use a slender tool (such as a small flat-head screwdriver or a ballpoint pen refill) to press the snap ring (C-shaped spring) inside the base while pulling the gas cylinder upward. If the snap ring is too tight, apply some cooking oil to lubricate the connection. Wait 20 minutes to 2 hours, then gently tap the connection with a hammer until a small gap appears, and then pull out the gas cylinder.
      • Install the New Gas Cylinder: Align the new gas cylinder with the base hole, insert it vertically, and press down slightly to ensure it fits snugly with the base.
      • Safety Precautions: Do not use hammering, prying, or heating methods to forcefully remove the gas cylinder to avoid damaging the gas cylinder or base structure and causing safety hazards.

Operation Tip: Before adjusting, confirm the type of chair to avoid forcing operations on non-adjustable structures. If you are not familiar with the disassembly steps, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician.
