How to Lower Office Chairs
Admin October 13, 2026
The methods for lowering office chairs vary depending on their types, as detailed below:

Adjustable Office Chairs
Adjustable office chairs are typically equipped with height-adjustment mechanisms, commonly available in two types: mechanical and pneumatic.
- Mechanical: Locate the handle on the support rod of the office chair, usually positioned beneath the seat near the support rod. Sit on the chair or press down firmly with your hands to increase stability, then lift the handle. The chair will lower as a result. This is because the handle controls the internal mechanical structure of the chair, and lifting it releases the locking mechanism, allowing the chair to descend under gravity.
- Pneumatic: Pneumatic office chairs rely on the air pressure within the gas cylinder to adjust height. Find the knob on the gas cylinder, typically located at the top or side. Rotate the chair clockwise to lower it; turning the knob clockwise releases air from the cylinder, thereby reducing the chair's height. When rotating the knob, apply moderate force to avoid damaging the knob or cylinder.
Fixed Office Chairs
Fixed office chairs do not have built-in height-adjustment capabilities, but there are methods to lower their height:
- Replace the Gas Cylinder: If the chair is too high and cannot be adjusted easily by other means, consider replacing the gas cylinder. First, invert the chair so that the seat faces down and the base faces up. Use a slender tool, such as a screwdriver, to press the spring clip inside the base while pulling up on the rod. If it is stuck tightly, apply some cooking oil for lubrication and wait 20 minutes to 2 hours for the oil to penetrate fully and provide lubrication. Then, gently tap the connection with a hammer until a small gap appears, allowing you to remove the old gas cylinder. Insert the new gas cylinder vertically into the base hole, ensuring it is securely installed.
- Install Adjustable Foot Pads: If the chair is only slightly too high, by a few millimeters to 1 centimeter, installing adjustable foot pads is a simple and effective solution. Adjustable foot pads can be adjusted to the desired height and installed on the base of the chair to fine-tune the overall height, making it more suitable for the user's needs.
