How to Lock an Office Chair
Admin October 09, 2026
The methods for locking an office chair vary depending on specific needs, mainly falling into two scenarios: preventing others from using it and locking the backrest from reclining. Here are the specific operations:

Preventing Others from Using
If you need to prevent others from using the office chair casually, you can use physical locks to secure it. Common methods include:
- Chain Lock: Composed of a high-strength chain and a lock core, when using it, wrap the chain around load-bearing and hard-to-remove parts of the office chair, such as the chair legs and armrest bases, and then fasten the lock core. This method is suitable for securing a single chair. Ensure that the chain length is sufficient to cover the target parts and that the lock core is strong enough to prevent damage.
- Combination Padlock: No key is required; it unlocks and locks through a preset digital code. Simply clip the lock onto the space between the chair legs or the gaps in the chair frame to complete the locking. This method is easy to operate and suitable for temporary securing, but be careful to avoid code leakage or being cracked by others.
- Flexible Cable Lock: The main body is a metal cable with a covering layer, which is highly flexible and can easily wrap around irregularly shaped office chairs. It can secure the chair legs and also bind the chair to nearby fixed furniture (such as the legs of an office desk) to increase security. This method is suitable for scenarios requiring multi-angle securing, but ensure that the cable length and fixed points are stable.
Locking the Backrest from Reclining
If you need to fix the backrest angle to prevent it from reclining, choose the corresponding method according to the chair's adjustment mechanism:
- Knob Type: A circular knob is usually located under the chair. By turning it clockwise, you can increase the backrest resistance until it is locked. This method is suitable for traditional office chairs. Adjust the knob force gradually to avoid damage from excessive force.
- Lever Type: A lever is located on the side or under the chair. Move it to the "lock" mark to fix the backrest. This method is intuitive to operate, but make sure the lever position is accurate. Some chairs may require simultaneous adjustment of other parts.
- Button Type: Some computer chairs are equipped with a dedicated button. Pressing it locks the backrest recline angle. For cable-controlled office chairs, press the button once after leaning back to the target position, then lean back slightly, and a "click" sound indicates successful locking. If it still cannot be locked after following the above operations, it is recommended to check the instruction manual or contact the manufacturer to confirm whether it is a mechanical failure.
Precautions:
- When using physical locks, ensure that the fixed points are stable to prevent the lock from falling off due to chair movement.
- When adjusting the backrest, follow the instructions in the manual to avoid damaging the internal structure through forced operation.
- If the chair has not been used for a long time or shows abnormalities, it is recommended to regularly check the functionality of the locks and adjustment mechanisms.
