How to Lay Down an Office Chair
Admin October 10, 2026
The operation of laying down an office chair should follow safety regulations, with the specific steps as follows:

I. Preparation Before Operation
- Environmental Inspection: Ensure that there are no obstacles in the operating area, such as walls or furniture, to avoid collisions during the laying-down process. The chair should be in a stable state with all four feet firmly on the ground. If there are wheels, they should be locked in advance or the chair should be placed on a flat surface.
- Equipment Inspection: Check that the chair's structure is intact, especially the adjustment lever, the connection between the base and the seat, and the backrest support components. If any damage, looseness, or abnormal noise is found, repair or replace the components first; otherwise, accidents may occur due to structural failure during laying down.
II. Adjustment Lever Operation
- Locating the Adjustment Lever: The adjustment lever is usually located near the edge of the base under the chair. Some designs are pedal-operated (pushed with the foot), while others require hand operation. If the chair supports multi-angle adjustment, the adjustment lever may be integrated at the connection between the seat and the backrest.
- Triggering the Adjustment Mechanism:
- Single-lever Design: Push the adjustment lever forward with your foot or hand to the extreme position. Some chairs require continuous pressure to maintain the laid-down state.
- Double-lever Design: You need to pull the lever under the seat backrest and the lever at the bottom of the seat simultaneously to unlock the backrest tilt function through coordinated operation.
- Special Design: A few high-end office chairs are equipped with electric or pneumatic adjustment devices, which require controlling the laying-down angle through buttons or a remote control on the side of the seat.
III. Control During the Laying-Down Process
- Slowly Adjusting Your Posture: After triggering the adjustment lever, the chair will gradually change from a sitting position to a reclining position. At this time, keep your body's center of gravity evenly distributed to avoid sideways force that may cause the chair to tip over. If you feel the chair wobbling or unstable support, stop the operation immediately and check the fixed state.
- Angle Fine-tuning: After laying down to the target angle, some chairs can further lock the position through the adjustment lever or fine-tune the backrest tilt by rotating the knob on the base. When adjusting, keep the movements gentle to prevent structural damage caused by sudden force.
IV. Usage Precautions
- Posture Restrictions: After laying down, avoid excessive rocking or rapid changes in posture to prevent the chair from moving due to inertia.
- Behavioral Norms: Do not place your feet on the chair armrests or tabletop to avoid disrupting the balance; it is strictly prohibited to sleep or maintain the same posture for a long time in the laid-down state to prevent poor blood circulation or muscle fatigue.
- Weight Limit: Follow the maximum weight limit specified in the chair's instruction manual. Overweight use may cause damage to the adjustment mechanism or the chair to collapse.
