How to Fold Up Office Chairs

Admin October 16, 2026

The method of folding up office chairs varies depending on the type, and specific operations should be selected according to the chair type.

Office chairs that can be used for sitting and sleeping during lunch breaks

These chairs usually achieve the folding of the backrest through locking mechanisms or adjustment levers. Common methods include:

  • Lever adjustment (pulling or flipping): Located on one side of the seat, when getting up, pull or flip the adjustment lever, and the backrest will automatically reset with the help of a gas spring. Keep your body stable during operation to avoid damaging the adjustment lever due to excessive force.
  • Knob adjustment: Release or lock the backrest by rotating a large knob. Clockwise rotation usually locks it, and counterclockwise rotation releases it. Apply even force during operation to avoid jamming.
  • Stepless adjustment: Some high-end models support automatic rebound when getting up, without manual operation. After use, make sure the backrest is fully locked to prevent accidental tipping. Regularly check the tightness of the adjustment mechanism and screws to ensure safety during use.

Office chairs with footrests

The folding of the footrest is usually achieved through buttons, pull rings, or direct force:

  • Button or pull-ring control: Find the button or pull ring of the footrest at the bottom of the chair, press the button or pull up the pull ring, and at the same time, forcefully fold the footrest up until it is flush with the bottom of the chair. Keep your hands dry during operation to avoid slipping.
  • Direct force folding: If there are no buttons or pull rings, you can try to fold the footrest up directly with force. After folding, check if the footrest is firmly fixed to prevent loosening and accidental situations.

Business folding chairs

The folding process should follow the steps of 'preparation - unlocking - folding - securing':

  • Preparation before folding: Clear the seat surface, check the surrounding environment to ensure there are no obstacles. Observe the locking device (such as buckles, buttons, or metal pins on both sides under the seat) and the folding direction (mostly an 'X' - shaped structure), and adjust your safe standing position to avoid injury during operation.
  • Unlocking the locking device: Press the buckles or buttons on both sides of the seat simultaneously (for buckle - type). When you hear a 'click' sound or feel a pop, the lock is released; for pin - type, pull it out vertically. Apply even force during operation to avoid damaging the device by applying force on one side only.
  • Folding the structure smoothly: Gently push the metal frame in the direction of its natural rebound to fold it. Avoid pulling or pushing hard to prevent deformation of the frame. Keep your hands symmetrically applying force during folding to ensure a stable folding of the structure.
  • Confirming locking and securing: Check if the metal arms are tightly folded together and confirm that the secondary locking function is properly engaged. If necessary, use elastic ropes or straps to assist in securing to prevent accidental unfolding during transportation or storage.
