How to Disassemble Office Chairs
Admin October 11, 2026
The disassembly of office chairs requires selecting the appropriate steps based on their structural type. Here are the common types and methods:

I. Office Chairs with Gas Lifts
Disassembly of External Accessories
- Headrest: If it is a slip-on design, simply pull it straight up. If it is fixed with screws, use a screwdriver of the corresponding size to loosen the screws at the connection between the back frame or headrest, and then remove the headrest.
- Armrests: Check the connection between the back frame and armrests or the side of the seat frame, find the fixing screws, and loosen them to separate the armrests from the main body. Some armrests may be fixed with snaps, which need to be pressed to unlock and then removed.
Disassembly of Main Connection Parts
- Backrest and Base: Most backrests are fixed to the base with three screws. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws and then lift the back frame straight up to separate it.
- Seat and Gas Lift: Raise the gas lift to its highest position. Hold the seat with one hand and press the lift lever with the other hand while shaking the seat left and right. Use the lever principle to detach the seat from the gas lift.
- Gas Lift and Chair Legs: Place the chair legs upside down on a soft surface (such as a carpet). Gently tap the bottom of the gas lift with a rubber mallet, or place a piece of wood underneath and tap it with a hammer to separate the gas lift from the chair legs. Avoid tapping the metal part of the gas lift directly to prevent deformation.
II. Household Wooden Dining Chairs
- Screw-Connected Type: Check the bottom of the seat or the side of the chair legs, find the exposed screws, and loosen them with a screwdriver to separate the seat from the chair legs. If the screws are rusty, you can drip a small amount of lubricating oil to assist in disassembly.
- Mortise-and-Tenon Structure Type: Use a hard plastic piece (such as a bank card) to slowly pry along the mortise-and-tenon gap, avoiding scratching the wood surface with metal tools. If the backrest and seat are connected with snaps, lift them straight up with a little force to remove them.
III. Folding Chairs
Open the folding snaps on the backrest or armrests (usually made of plastic or metal), and lay the backrest backward until it is fully extended. Then loosen the fixing snaps on the chair legs (usually located at the intersection of the chair legs) and fold the chair legs to complete the disassembly.
Precautions:
- Avoid using excessive force during disassembly, especially for gas lift components, to prevent sudden release of internal high-pressure gas and resulting injury.
- Classify and put small parts such as screws and snaps into sealed bags or containers to avoid loss or confusion.
- If the office chair has leather or fabric components, pay attention to protecting the surface during disassembly to prevent scratches or tears.
