How to Disassemble an Office Chair
You can disassemble an office chair by following these steps. It is recommended to wear protective gloves and prepare tools such as an Allen wrench and a rubber mallet before starting the operation:

1. Understand the Component Structure An office chair typically consists of parts such as chair legs, casters, gas lift, base, seat, backrest, armrests, and headrest. The fixing methods may vary among different models, but most are connected with screws or clips. Before disassembly, identify the connection methods of each component to avoid damage caused by violent disassembly.
2. Remove the Backrest
- Locate the fixing screws (usually Allen screws) at the connection between the backrest and the seat. Use an Allen wrench of the corresponding size to loosen them by turning counterclockwise.
- If the screws are rusty or too tight, spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) to help loosen them.
- After separation, place the backrest in a safe position to avoid bumps.
3. Remove the Base and Gas Lift
- Separate the base: Raise the gas lift to the highest position. Hold the edge of the seat with one hand and press the height adjustment lever with the other hand (some users report that the lever needs to be pulled backward and downward, and the arm should pass under the seat to support it). At the same time, gently shake the seat. When the base becomes loose, pull it upward to remove it.
- Remove the gas lift: Turn the chair legs upside down. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the connection between the gas lift and the chair legs (if there is no rubber mallet, you can use a wooden board to pad on the top of the gas lift and tap it). Use the vibration to separate the two. Avoid tapping directly with metal tools to prevent scratches or deformation on the surface of the gas lift.
4. Remove the Armrests and Headrest
- The armrests are usually fixed to both sides of the seat with Allen screws. Use a wrench to unscrew the screws and remove the armrests.
- If the headrest is designed to be removable, check its connection method with the backrest (usually clips or screws) and separate it accordingly.
5. Separate the Seat and Base Frame The seat and the base frame are mostly fixed by interference fit or screws. If it is an interference fit, use a rubber mallet to gently tap the side of the connection between the seat and the base frame to separate them slowly. If it is fixed with screws, unscrew the screws and remove the base frame. Do not pull directly to prevent component breakage.
Precautions
- Safety first: The gas lift and chair legs that have been used for a long time may be tightly fastened. It is not recommended to disassemble them unless necessary. When disassembling, keep your body balanced to avoid falling due to the sudden separation of components.
- Office chairs with electrical components: For office chairs with electrical components such as massage chairs, unplug the power supply before disassembly. Avoid the motor and wiring parts, and do not pull the wires apart during disassembly.
- Component storage: Classify and put the removed screws and small components into containers to avoid loss. Mark the positions of each component for easy subsequent assembly.
