How to Disassemble and Wash Office Chairs

Admin October 13, 2026

Disassembling and washing an office chair requires handling each component separately. Here are the specific steps:

I. Disassembling the Chair Body

  1. Tool Preparation: Choose tools based on the design, such as a hammer (with a towel to prevent damage), a hand drill, and a hex screwdriver.
  2. Disassembly Sequence:
    • Headrest: Most headrests are fixed to the top of the chair back with two screws. Simply unscrew them with a screwdriver.
    • Armrests: The screw positions vary by design and may be on the side of the back frame or seat cushion frame. Carefully locate and remove them.
    • Chair Back: The back frame and base are usually fixed with three screws. Remove them from the bottom or side, and remember to save the screws.
    • Seat Cushion: Some seat cushions are connected to the base with clips or screws. Gently lift or loosen the screws to separate them.
    • Gas Cylinder and Chair Legs: For complete disassembly, use a specialized tool (such as a gas cylinder extractor) to separate the gas cylinder from the chair legs, but this is not necessary unless required.

II. Disassembling and Washing the Casters

  1. Removing the Casters:

    • Turn the chair upside down (with the seat facing down). Most casters are designed with clips. Hold the bracket with your hand and pull it outward. If it is stuck, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth to pry the edge of the clip.
    • If the wheels are fixed with screws, use the corresponding tool (such as a wrench) to unscrew and remove them.
  2. Clearing Debris:

    • Use tweezers to pick out long hair and fibers from the gaps along the direction of caster rotation to prevent tangling.
    • Use an old toothbrush dipped in neutral detergent to gently scrub the surface and bearing gaps to remove grease. Rinse with water, wipe dry, and air-dry for 10 minutes.
    • You can also use your fingers, scissors, or a vacuum cleaner to remove debris, and use duct tape to help adsorb tiny particles.
  3. Deep Cleaning:

    • For stubborn stains, use a butter knife to cut parallel to the wheel to remove them, or soak them in soapy water and scrub (after clearing internal debris first).
    • For non-removable wheels, rinse them with a hose or wipe them with an alcohol pad (avoid corrosion based on the material).
  4. Lubricating and Reassembling:

    • After air-drying, apply 1-2 drops of specialized lubricant to the bearings and rotate the casters to distribute the oil evenly.
    • Align the clips and push them in until you hear a 'click' to confirm they are securely installed. Turn the chair upright and test for smooth rotation. If it is stuck, recheck for debris.

Precautions: Save all screws and small components during disassembly; avoid using strongly alkaline cleaners; do not use cooking oil as lubricant; regular cleaning can extend the service life.
