How to Disassemble an Office Chair
Disassembling an office chair requires step-by-step operations based on its structure, with core steps including separating the backrest, base, gas lift, and seat cushion. Key tools include wrenches, rubber mallets, and lubricants. Here are the specific methods:

I. General Disassembly Principles
An office chair typically consists of components such as chair legs, casters, chassis, seat, gas lift, backrest, armrests, and headrest. When disassembling, follow the reverse order of installation, prioritizing the loosening of screws or clips. For difficult areas such as the connections between the gas lift and base or seat cushion, targeted methods should be employed to avoid damage caused by forceful disassembly.
II. Core Component Disassembly Steps
Separating the Backrest and Seat Cushion
If the backrest is fixed with screws, use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws at the bottom and remove it. If it has a clip structure, use a plastic pry bar to slowly pry it open along the gap, avoiding scratches on the surface. For some high-end models where the backrest and seat cushion are connected by metal pins, press the pins while lifting the backrest upwards.Removing the Base and Gas Lift
- Method 1: Lever Adjustment Method
Raise the gas lift to its highest position. Hold the seat cushion firmly with one hand and continuously press the lever adjustment with the other hand while shaking the seat cushion left and right. Use the lever principle to separate the base from the gas lift. - Method 2: Tapping and Loosening Method
Invert the chair and tap evenly around the bottom steel ring of the base with a rubber mallet to loosen the internal clips. If it still cannot be separated, step on one side of the five-claw base with your foot and shake the seat cushion up and down with both hands, or place a wooden board under the root of the gas lift and tap it lightly with a rubber mallet to make it fall off. - Stuck Handling: If the gas lift is stuck to the chassis, inject WD-40 rust inhibitor into the joint and let it sit for 30 minutes before attempting to separate it. If the joint is fixed with epoxy resin adhesive, use a hairdryer to heat it to 60ยฐC to soften the adhesive.
- Method 1: Lever Adjustment Method
Extracting the Gas Lift
Invert the chair legs and tap the metal ring at the root of the gas lift with a rubber mallet, or tap it with a wooden board in between to make it come out of the chair legs. Never tap directly on the thin outer steel tube of the gas lift, as it may cause the oil seal to fail.Removing the Seat Cushion
Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the four screws at the bottom of the seat cushion. If the screws are rusty, drip some lubricant and let it sit for 10 minutes before operating. Some seat cushions are fixed with plastic clips and need to be slowly pried open along the edge with a pry bar.
III. Handling Special Situations
- Gas Lift Cannot Be Pulled Out: Hold the rod body and lift it vertically while shaking it slightly left and right, or use needle-nose pliers to clamp out the plastic washer stuck in the hole of the chassis.
- Residual Component Cleaning: Check the holes in the chassis for plastic fragments or glue residue to ensure no foreign objects affect subsequent installation.
Precautions: Take photos of the overall structure before disassembly for easy reassembly. Wear gloves during operation to prevent scratches. If the components are severely aged, it is recommended to replace them directly rather than forcing disassembly.
