How to Deflate an Office Chair

Admin October 16, 2026

Deflating an office chair requires using corresponding methods based on the type of pneumatic rod or lifting mechanism. Before operation, ensure the environment is safe and take protective measures.

  1. For pneumatic rods with a deflation port
The deflation port of such pneumatic rods is usually located at the bottom or side. Use a tool that matches the thread (such as a small wrench or screwdriver) to slowly unscrew it. Keep the pneumatic rod vertical during operation to avoid accidents caused by rapid gas ejection. While unscrewing, gently press the pneumatic rod to assist in gas release, and observe the pressure changes. Stop deflating when the chair feels comfortable to sit on and there is no risk of sudden sinking. Finally, tighten the deflation port and check the sealing. If the sealing is not tight, the pneumatic rod may fail or leak air.

  2. For chairs with a deflation button
Some chairs have a round or square deflation button on the chassis or at the bottom of the pneumatic rod. Pressing the button releases the gas slowly through an internal channel. Keep the chair stable during operation to avoid tilting due to pressure changes. During deflation, press the button multiple times to adjust the height until the desired height is reached. This design is usually used for simple lifting chairs, and the operation risk is relatively low, but still avoid getting your fingers stuck by the button.

  3. For deflating the mechanical structure of some lifting chairs
First, remove the chassis screws (usually 4 large screws), take out the white buckle to expose the protruding iron needle inside. Use a fine star screwdriver to press the iron needle into a concave shape, and insert a shortened iron skewer (such as an aluminum skewer) as a temporary air valve. Repeatedly press the top of the iron needle with a lifting wrench. When you hear a hissing sound of gas escaping, slowly deflate. This method requires strict control of the force to avoid breaking the iron needle or damaging the inside of the pneumatic rod. It is recommended to be operated by professionals.

  4. Another forced deflation method for pneumatic rods
Remove the seat cushion and pull off the plastic cap, separate the movable star-shaped frame to expose the air needle. Use a large and a small screwdriver to press the air needle together. After hearing a popping sound, continue to press until the gas is completely exhausted. This method may damage the internal structure of the pneumatic rod, causing the chair to be unusable. It is only suitable for discarded chairs or emergency repair scenarios.

Safety tips:

  • Clear the surrounding items before operation and wear goggles and gloves to prevent high-pressure gas splashing.
  • If the surface of the pneumatic rod has cracks, rust, or abnormal swelling, do not deflate it by yourself. Contact the manufacturer for replacement.
  • When unfamiliar with the structure, refer to the instruction manual or contact after-sales service first to avoid damaging the chair or causing personal injury due to misoperation.
