How to Convert a Rotating Office Chair into a Bed
Admin October 08, 2026
A rotating office chair cannot be directly converted into a bed, but two identical fixed-type rotating office chairs can be joined together to create a temporary resting spot. Here's how:

I. Preparation and Environment Selection
Choose a spacious, flat, and less-trafficked location (such as a corner of the room) to avoid operating in hallways or areas with frequent foot traffic. The chairs used must meet two conditions:
- Consistent Structure: Preferably, select two identical fixed-type rotating office chairs (without casters). If the chairs have wheels, lock them in advance to prevent sliding;
- Stability Verification: Check that the chair legs are sturdy to avoid tipping over due to uneven weight distribution after joining.
II. Core Joining Method
- Angle Adjustment: Adjust one of the chairs to a semi-reclined position by tilting the backrest backward to a stable reclining posture (usually between 120ยฐ and 150ยฐ), ensuring there is no looseness at the connection between the backrest and the seat;
- Positioning: Place the other chair parallel or slightly staggered (with a gap of about 10-15 cm), and rest your legs on the seat of the second chair to provide continuous support for your waist and hips, avoiding a hollow waist;
- Extended Support (Optional): For a larger support surface (e.g., for individuals taller than 180 cm), four chairs can be joined in a staggered manner to form a "checkerboard" structure, enhancing stability through crossed chair legs.
III. Comfort Optimization Tips
- Alleviate Hardness: Lay soft cushions, folded clothes, or specialized memory foam pads on the joined surface to reduce pressure on the skin from the metal or plastic chair surface;
- Reinforce Stability: If the joined chairs wobble, tie the chair legs with ropes or insert wooden strips to form a triangular support structure to prevent tipping;
- Additional Support: Place a U-shaped pillow or a rolled-up towel at the head position to reduce cervical spine pressure.
IV. Precautions
- Time Limit: This method is only suitable for short naps (โค30 minutes). Prolonged lying down may lead to lumbar disc herniation or spinal distortion;
- Support Integrity: Avoid using a joining method that leaves the waist suspended (e.g., supporting only the upper body with one chair). Ensure continuous support from the head to the legs;
- Weight Limit: The weight capacity of a single rotating office chair is usually 100-120 kg. The total weight capacity after joining is not recommended to exceed 200 kg. Overloading may cause the chair legs to deform.
For a complete conversion into a bed, additional purchases such as a bed frame or folding bed accessories (e.g., detachable bed boards, supports) are required. There are currently no feasible technical solutions for direct conversion using only rotating office chairs.
