How to Clean Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

Cleaning office chairs requires cleaning different parts separately, as follows:

Seat, Backrest, Armrests, etc.

  1. Cleaning Order and Rag Requirements: The correct process is to clean from top to bottom, in the order of the backrest, seat cushion, armrests, and chair legs, ensuring nothing is missed. The rag used must be slightly damp and not dripping water to prevent water stains and keep the chair from getting damp, thus avoiding damage to the surface.
  2. Deep Cleaning Steps: First, perform a comprehensive vacuuming to remove surface dust and debris from the crevices. Then, apply professional foam to allow the cleaning agent to fully penetrate the fixed fibers. After that, use high-temperature equipment for treatment, which can both disinfect and effectively remove stains and bacteria.

Office Chair Casters

  1. Hair Entanglement Handling:
    • For hair entangled on the wheels, a time-consuming method is to use very small scissors for handling.
    • Alternatively, you can first disassemble the casters. Most office chair casters are designed with snap-on mechanisms. Hold the caster bracket with your hand and gently pull it outward. If it is stuck tightly, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth underneath to gently pry the edge of the snap-on part to remove the caster. Then, use tweezers to pick out the long hairs and carpet fibers from the caster crevices one by one. Note to pick in the direction of the caster's rotation.
  2. Dirt Cleaning:
    • After the entangled hair is cleaned, prepare a used facial cloth, wet it, and then let it air-dry slightly. Use the convex side of the cloth to wrap around the wheels, secure it with a rubber band, and then sit on the chair and move it back and forth. The dirt on the wheels will rub off onto the facial cloth.
    • You can also use an old toothbrush dipped in a small amount of neutral detergent (do not use strongly alkaline cleaning agents to prevent corrosion of the casters). Gently brush the surface of the casters and the crevices of the bearings to remove residual dust and oil stains. Finally, rinse the casters with clean water (avoid getting water into the bearing part), dry them with a dry cloth, and let them air-dry in a well-ventilated place for 10 minutes.
  3. Subsequent Handling: After the casters are dry, drip 1 - 2 drops of lubricating oil at the bearings (choose lubricating oil specifically for office equipment and avoid using cooking oil to prevent dust absorption). Turn the casters by hand to distribute the lubricating oil evenly. Then, align the casters with the bracket snap-on parts and gently push them in until you hear a "click" sound, confirming that the casters are firmly installed. Finally, turn the office chair upright and push it to test if the casters roll smoothly. If there is still stuttering, check if there is any residual debris that has not been cleaned. In addition, you can stick invisible tape on the wheels to prevent them from being too slippery, and it is convenient to replace the tape without having to clean each wheel one by one.
