How to Assemble and Disassemble Office Chairs

Admin October 17, 2026

The assembly and disassembly of office chairs can be carried out according to the following steps, which are divided into three cases: assembly, regular disassembly, and disassembly without using professional tools:

Assembly Steps

  1. Assemble from the bottom up: First, install the casters onto the chair legs, ensuring that each caster is firmly connected. After installing the chair legs, place the gas lift vertically into the center of the chair legs, ensuring that the gas lift is perpendicular to the chair legs and does not wobble.
  2. Secure the base plate: Use screws to fix the base plate onto the seat. Make sure the screws are tightened to prevent the base plate from loosening and affecting use.
  3. Connect the backrest and the seat: Connect the backrest and the seat to form the upper part of the chair. Ensure that the joints are aligned during connection.
  4. Insert the base: Insert the base with the upper part assembled vertically onto the gas lift. Insert it slowly and apply even force.
  5. Install the armrests and headrest: Finally, install the armrests and headrest. Adjust their positions according to the design and secure them.

Regular Disassembly Steps

  1. Separate the backrest: First, separate the backrest from the seat. Be careful with the force applied during the operation to avoid damaging the components.
  2. Disassemble the base: Raise the gas lift to its highest position. Hold the seat with one hand and press the lift adjustment lever with the other hand. Shake it a few times to remove the base.
  3. Remove the gas lift: Turn the chair legs upside down. It is best to use a rubber mallet to knock out the gas lift. If you don't have a rubber mallet, you can use a piece of wood as a cushion and then knock to prevent damaging the chair legs.
  4. Disassemble other parts: Loosen the screws in the reverse order of assembly to disassemble other parts. Among them, the separation of the seat and the gas rod, as well as the separation of the gas rod and the chair legs, are relatively difficult and require careful operation.

Disassembly without Using Professional Tools (Taking an ergonomic chair as an example)

  1. Prepare tools: Mainly use a hammer, a power drill (which can be replaced by a hex screwdriver), and a towel.
  2. Remove the headrest: If the headrest is directly inserted and fixed with screws, unscrew the screws to remove it.
  3. Remove the armrests: Depending on the design of the armrests, the screws may be located on the back frame or the seat frame. Find the screw positions and unscrew them to remove the armrests.
  4. Remove the back frame: Lay the chair down. Most of the time, the backrest and the base are fixed with three screws. Unscrew the screws to remove the back frame.
  5. Disassemble the hydraulic rod connections: Disconnect the connections between the hydraulic rod and the base, and between the hydraulic rod and the chair legs to complete the disassembly.
