How to Align an Office Chair
Aligning an office chair properly requires comprehensive adjustments to the wheels, seat height, sitting posture angle, armrest height, and monitor height. Here are the specific methods:

1. Check and Adjust the Wheels
If the chair is tilted or cannot move smoothly, prioritize checking the condition of the wheel feet. Invert the chair and observe whether each wheel foot is bent, broken, or worn. If damage is found, replace the entire set of wheels:
- Purchase matching wheels: Contact the manufacturer for the model number to order, or take the old wheels to an office supplies store to match the shape and size of the wheel axles.
- Remove old wheels: Pull out the wheel feet directly by hand; if they are stuck, insert a flat-head screwdriver into the gap between the wheel foot and the chair's contact point, and gently pry until loose, then pull out; for a very small number of wheels fixed with screws, use a screwdriver to remove them.
- Install new wheels: Spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) inside the chair base sockets, or apply a pea-sized amount of petroleum jelly; align the rod of the new wheel with the socket, push gently by hand first, and when not stuck, tap lightly near the base of the wheel stem with a rubber mallet until fully inserted.
- Test stability: Sit on the inverted chair after installation. If it rolls smoothly and does not tilt, the wheel adjustment is complete; if it still tilts, further check whether the seat plate is damaged.
2. Adjust the Seat Height
The seat height directly affects the distribution of body weight. When adjusting, ensure:
- Feet flat on the ground: The thighs and calves should form an angle of 95ยฐ~100ยฐ to avoid concentrating weight on the buttocks and thighs.
- Use auxiliary tools: If the chair is too high and causes the feet to hang in the air, place a footrest; if the chair is too low and increases pressure on the knee joints, raise the seat or replace the chair.
3. Adjust the Sitting Posture Angle
Correct sitting posture can reduce lumbar spine pressure:
- Recline angle: Maintain a slightly reclined posture of 100ยฐ~110ยฐ to make the back, especially the lumbar region, fit against the chair back.
- Lumbar support adjustment: If the chair is equipped with lumbar support, adjust it to a position that supports the natural curve of the lumbar spine to avoid the lumbar region hanging in the air.
4. Adjust the Armrest Height
The armrest height should match the natural state of the arms:
- Elbow angle: Adjust the armrests so that when the elbows hang naturally, the forearms can rest easily on the armrests or the desktop, with the upper arms and forearms forming an angle of about 100ยฐ.
- Avoid shrugging: Armrests that are too high will cause shoulder tension, while those that are too low will increase neck pressure.
5. Adjust the Monitor Height
The position of the monitor affects spinal posture:
- Eye-level view: Elevate the monitor until the eyes are level with the top edge of the screen to avoid bending the spine by looking down or leaning forward.
- Maintain natural extension: When the monitor height is appropriate, the spine can remain naturally straight, reducing fatigue from prolonged sitting.
