How to Adjust Office Chair Backrest
The adjustment and use of an office chair backrest should be carried out according to its specific functions. The core steps include filling gaps, angle adjustment, height adjustment, and recline function adjustment. Here are the specific methods:

1. Filling the Lumbar Gap
If there is a gap between the chair back and the lumbar region, it can lead to a lack of support for the lumbar spine, potentially causing fatigue or injury over long-term use. In this case, use soft objects (such as cushions or rolled-up towels) to fill the gap, allowing the lumbar curve to fit snugly against the chair back and form stable support. This step is applicable to all types of office chairs, especially those with fixed backrests that provide insufficient lumbar support.
2. Angle Adjustment
Most office chair backrests support angle adjustment to accommodate different sitting postures. To adjust, locate the knob or lever on the side of the seat and gently pull or rotate it to unlock the backrest. It is recommended to try multiple angles (such as 100ยฐ-120ยฐ) and choose the position that best fits the curve of your back and allows for comfortable sitting over long periods. For example, you can adjust to a slightly more upright angle for reading and a greater recline angle for resting.
3. Height Adjustment
High-end office chairs are usually equipped with backrest height adjustment functions to match the spine positions of users of different heights. To adjust, find the adjustment lever on the back or side of the backrest, lift it, and move the backrest up or down. Ensure that both the lumbar and back regions receive support to avoid excessive stress on a single area. If the chair backrest has a fixed height, you can indirectly optimize support by adjusting the height of the seat cushion.
4. Recline Function Adjustment (for chairs with a recline function)
- Unlocking the Recline: Gently pull the handle on the right side to allow the backrest to move freely and enter recline mode.
- Adjusting the Tension: The cylindrical knob on the base controls the recline resistance. Turn it clockwise to increase the rebound support force (suitable for heavier individuals) and counterclockwise to decrease the resistance (suitable for lighter individuals). The standard is for the back to naturally fit against the backrest without requiring force to maintain the position.
- Locking the Angle: Pull out the control lever on the right side of the seat cushion, and the backrest can recline freely to the target angle (such as 135ยฐ). Gently push the control lever to lock it and prevent accidental rebound.
- Returning to Upright Position: Pull the control lever outward and gently push your back to return the chair to an upright position. Push the control lever back in to lock it in place and ensure a stable sitting posture.
Precautions: Maintain an upright sitting posture during adjustment and avoid sudden force or rapid movement. If the chair has complex functions, refer to the instruction manual or consult after-sales personnel to prevent damage caused by misoperation.
