How to Adjust an Office Chair
Admin October 09, 2026
Adjusting an office chair requires step-by-step operation based on specific functions. Here are common adjustment methods:

I. Recline Adjustment
The recline function is achieved through levers, knobs, or pneumatic systems, depending on the chair's design. Choose the appropriate method accordingly:
- Lever Adjustment System: A control lever is usually located on the right or left side beneath the seat. Some chairs require releasing the recline lock first. When operating, lean your body backward to the desired angle, adjust the lever to a comfortable position, and then lock it. If you need to increase the recline resistance, fine-tune the resistance knob on the lever (if available).
- Knob Adjustment System: An independent knob is located beneath the seat. Turning it clockwise increases the recline resistance, while turning it counterclockwise decreases it. Some chairs allow direct adjustment of the recline angle range through a separate knob.
- Pneumatic Adjustment System: This shares the same control device as the height adjustment lever. By pushing the lever in different directions, you can achieve smooth recline adjustments, suitable for scenarios requiring frequent angle changes. Note: Ensure the chair's center of gravity is stable during adjustment to prevent tipping over due to excessive recline angles.
II. Height Adjustment
Seat height directly affects sitting posture health and should follow ergonomic principles:
- Adjust the seat so that your feet are flat on the ground, with the angle between your thighs and calves maintained at 95ยฐ-100ยฐ. If the chair is too high, use a footrest; if it's too low, it will significantly increase pressure on your knee joints.
- Height adjustment is usually controlled by a gas lift beneath the seat. Press the lever to raise or lower the seat, and release it to lock the position.
III. Sitting Angle and Lumbar Support Adjustment
- Sitting Angle: Lean back slightly to an angle of 100ยฐ-110ยฐ, allowing your back, especially your lower back, to fit against the chair back and distribute spinal pressure.
- Lumbar Support Adjustment: Adjust the lumbar support position according to the natural curve of your lumbar spine, ensuring it supports the 3rd to 5th lumbar vertebrae. Some chairs allow the lumbar support to move up and down or forward and backward, which can be adjusted using side buttons or manual pushing and pulling.
IV. Armrest Adjustment
Armrest height should match the height of your desk to reduce shoulder and neck fatigue:
- Adjust the armrests so that when your elbows hang naturally, your forearms can rest easily on the armrests or the desk.
- The angle between your upper arms and forearms should be close to 100ยฐ, avoiding arm suspension or excessive adduction. Some chairs have armrests that support left-right rotation or forward-backward sliding, which should be adjusted flexibly according to the usage scenario.
V. Headrest Adjustment (if applicable)
Headrest height is usually adjusted by lifting, and some designs support slight forward-backward position adjustments:
- Taking the Qingxian Dynamic Ergonomic Chair as an example, lift the headrest until it fits snugly against the back of your head, ensuring natural extension of your cervical spine.
- If the headrest supports angle adjustment, adjust it according to your sitting posture to support the back of your head.
Notes:
- Static postures should be adjusted every 30 minutes, and stretching exercises can be incorporated to relieve muscle tension.
- Different brands (such as the Sihoo C300 Second Generation Pro) may have exclusive adjustment methods. It is recommended to refer to the product manual or contact after-sales service for precise guidance.
