How to Add Wheels to an Office Chair

Admin October 14, 2026

There are mainly two methods for adding wheels to an office chair: directly installing new wheels and replacing old wheels. The specific steps are as follows:

If it is the first time to install new wheels and there are wheel interfaces reserved at the bottom of the chair, the plug-in method is usually used. Most office chair wheels are of the plug-in design, and the installation process is relatively simple. First, confirm that there are interfaces at the bottom of the chair that match the wheels, usually circular or square holes. Then, align the plug of the wheel with the interface and press it down vertically until the wheel is fully embedded in the interface and there is no wobbling. During this process, pay attention to applying force evenly to avoid damaging the interface or the wheel due to excessive force. After installation, gently rotate the wheel to check if it rotates smoothly without any jamming.

If you need to replace old wheels, first identify the style of the old wheels and then select the corresponding disassembly and installation tools. Common styles of old wheels include snap-ring types and threaded types. The connection of snap-ring wheels has a disc-like shape, and they are fixed by the elasticity of the snap ring that holds the wheel in the interface. The connection of threaded wheels has a hexagonal shape, and they are fixed by screwing into the nut at the bottom of the chair.

For snap-ring wheels, a screwdriver is required for disassembly. Insert the blade of the screwdriver into the gap between the wheel and the chair interface, gently pry the snap ring to separate it from the wheel, and then slowly pull out the old wheel. When installing a new wheel, align the plug of the new wheel with the interface and press it down firmly until you hear a 'click' sound or feel that the wheel is securely in place.

For threaded wheels, a wrench is required for both disassembly and installation. During disassembly, place the wrench on the hexagonal connection of the wheel and turn it counterclockwise until the old wheel is completely unscrewed. When installing a new wheel, align the threaded end of the new wheel with the nut at the bottom of the chair and turn it clockwise with the wrench until the wheel is tightened and there is no looseness. After installation, also check the rotation of the wheel to ensure it can be used normally.
