Hazards of Swivel Office Chairs

Admin October 14, 2026

The hazards of swivel office chairs are mainly reflected in increasing the burden on the back and waist, poor stability, inducing poor sitting postures, explosion risks, ineffective locking functions, secondary injury risks, and affecting comfort.

  1. Increasing the burden on the back and waist: If the wheels are not cleaned for years, hair entanglement can cause stuttering, making the sitting posture unstable. To maintain balance, the waist muscles will unconsciously tense up and exert force continuously. Sitting for eight hours a day is equivalent to the waist silently bearing an extra eight hours of pressure, which is more concealed than the harm caused by crossing legs. Over time, it may lead to problems such as lumbar muscle strain and straightening of the lumbar curvature.
  2. Poor stability, prone to slipping and falling: The wheels disrupt the static stability of the stool. When the body's center of gravity shifts slightly or the ground is uneven, the stool is prone to slipping, causing the user to fall unexpectedly. Especially for some cheap products, with unreasonable structural designs and poor load-bearing capacity, the wheels themselves may tilt due to uneven force, leading to side-tipping during movement.
  3. Inducing poor sitting postures and damaging spinal health: Chairs with wheels are prone to sliding, forcing the body to unconsciously lean forward or sideways to maintain balance. This forward-leaning sitting posture increases the pressure on the lumbar spine by 40%. Maintaining this poor posture for a long time will triple the risk of intervertebral disc degeneration. At the same time, the core muscle group (the muscles in the waist and abdomen) will 'slack off' and exert less force. Long-term lack of exercise may lead to muscle atrophy, leaving the spine without a strong protective layer and ultimately causing chronic low back pain.
  4. Uneven product quality, hiding explosion risks: Mainly for swivel chairs with pneumatic height adjustment functions, the quality of the pneumatic rods in some inferior or 'three-no' products on the market is worrying, posing a potential explosion risk. An experiment simulating the impact force when a person suddenly sits down shows that unqualified height-adjustable chairs will not only explode but may also be accompanied by combustion and the production of thick smoke, causing serious harm to the user.
  5. Lack of standards, often ineffective locking functions: Many products on the market are judged as unqualified due to the 'casters not being lockable'. An ineffective locking function means that the stool cannot be fixed in the desired position, greatly increasing safety risks.
  6. Risk of secondary injuries from sharp components: Some poorly made inferior products have obvious flaws in manufacturing processes. For example, nails that are too long, unprocessed metal burrs, and sharp plastic edges. These sharp components may scratch or prick the user during use, especially for active children, posing additional safety hazards.
  7. Material and quality affecting comfort: Due to cost control, the comfort of office swivel chairs is not high. Secondly, the seat cushion material and design of swivel chairs are relatively soft and lack sufficient support. Using such chairs for a long time, the waist does not get enough support, making it prone to fatigue and even causing low back pain. It may also affect the blood circulation in the buttocks and legs, aggravating the body's fatigue.
