Five Design Rules for an Attractive Third Space

Admin September 28, 2026

The concept of the "third space" was proposed by the American scholar Edward W. Soja. The third space emphasizes the social nature of placesโ€”public spaces such as coffee shops, teahouses, bars, and community centers. As companies pay ever more attention to how employees feel, hoping to create more comfortable work environments and deepen employees' identification with company culture, the "de-institutionalization" of office space is a clear trend. Here are five design rules for the third space:

1. A third space should meet employees' physical and mental health needs

To create a healthy, comfortable third space, consider weaving in natural elements such as greenery and sunlight, and providing ergonomically designed office equipment, to increase both employee comfort and productivity.

2. A third space should be flexible and multifunctional

Flexible design can accommodate different types of workโ€”solo work, teamwork, or hybrid work modesโ€”while multifunctionality can serve a wide range of employee needs, such as meetings, rest, and learning.

3. A third space should encourage communication and collaboration

In the design, consider arranging shared spaces and social areas, along with entertainment facilities and fitness equipment, to increase interaction and exchange among employees.

4. A third space should create a distinctive atmosphere and brand image

Based on the company's culture and values, design elements and decoration can be used to create a distinctive atmosphere and style, strengthening employees' sense of belonging and pride.

5. A third space should respect employees' privacy needs.

The design should include some private spaces and partitions so employees can avoid disturbing one another and block out noise.

In short, the design of an office third space should address employees' physical and mental health needs, flexibility and multifunctionality, communication and collaboration, a distinctive atmosphere, and privacy, in order to create a more comfortable, efficient, and innovative work environment.
