Falling Office Chair
A falling office chair is usually caused by the failure of the gas spring (pneumatic rod), which can be resolved through self-inspection, troubleshooting other faults, and taking repair measures.

Reasons for Gas Spring Failure
The gas spring is the core component for height adjustment in pneumatic lift chairs. Wear on the internal seals and nitrogen gas leakage can lead to a loss of locking force, causing the chair to fall.
Symptoms of Gas Spring Failure
When the gas spring fails, there are several typical symptoms, such as slow automatic sinking, inability to rebound when pressed, audible gas leaks, and tilted seating.
Self-Inspection Methods
You can use the "three-step self-inspection method" to initially determine if the gas spring is leaking:
- Press Test: Quickly press down on the seat with your hand and feel the rebound force and cushioning. If you feel like you're sitting directly on the bottom with no rebound, it's likely leaking.
- Sit and Listen: After sitting on the chair, remain still and listen carefully for any continuous gas leaks from the bottom of the chair.
- Observe Behavior: Check if the chair sinks automatically without adjustment or is noticeably uneven.
Troubleshooting Other Possibilities
Before concluding it's a gas spring issue, quickly check for other possibilities: inspect the adjustment valve/locking mechanism at the bottom of the chair for obstructions; ensure all connecting screws and bolts are tightened; if it's an electric lift chair, check the power supply, circuitry, and motor.
Repair Methods
- Replace the Gas Spring: Replacing it yourself is a cost-effective solution. Prepare tools, purchase a qualified new gas spring, ensure the specifications match, and prioritize products with safety certifications. When removing the old gas spring, first raise the chair to its highest position, place it upside down on a stable surface, protect it with a soft cloth, and gently tap the edge of the base center sleeve with a hammer to separate it.
- Use a Hose Clamp: Slide down the plastic skirt, adjust the chair height, wrap the hose clamp around the cylinder, improve grip by wrapping rubber bands, and tighten the clamp before testing.
- Use PVC Pipe: Measure the diameter and length of the cylinder, purchase suitable PVC pipe, saw it open lengthwise, and fit it over the cylinder.
Additionally, fixed-leg bow chairs without wheels, featuring an integrated bow-shaped steel base, do not have gas spring failure issues. For scenarios that do not require frequent movement, you can also choose fixed-leg bow chairs.
