Explosion Risk of Adjustable Office Chairs
The explosion of adjustable office chairs is an extremely dangerous phenomenon. The internal gas pressure rod may explode under specific conditions, causing serious personal injury.

Working Principle and Potential Risks of the Gas Pressure Rod in Adjustable Chairs
The gas pressure rod in an adjustable chair is essentially a miniature high-pressure vessel that relies on gas pressure to push the piston and enable seat adjustment. In qualified gas pressure rods from reputable manufacturers, high-purity inert nitrogen is filled, which is stable and safe to control. A compliant gas rod can withstand a pressure of up to 2000 pounds. However, some unscrupulous manufacturers, in order to save costs, replace the safe nitrogen with cheap ordinary compressed air. The oxygen in the air continuously reacts with the metal inner wall through oxidation, causing continuous rusting and heat accumulation. This turns the gas pressure rod into a sealed, continuously pressurized pressure cooker, with the internal pressure soaring day by day while the outer tube wall becomes thinner and more brittle, eventually leading to an explosion under certain circumstances.
Common Triggers for Explosions
Exposure to intense summer sunlight, sudden sitting down, or even a tiny crack inside can serve as triggers. For example, in 2013, when Ms. Liu was sitting on an online-purchased adjustable swivel chair to blow-dry her hair, the gas pressure rod exploded. A steel rod with a diameter of 3 centimeters (or about 2 centimeters according to some sources) pierced through her body like a cannonball, entering her abdomen. Blood soaked the floor, and more than ten metal fragments were extracted from her abdomen and intestines. Over the past decade, more than forty similar tragedies have occurred in China, all involving the explosion of the gas pressure rod from the bottom of the seat, piercing through the human body.
Preventive Measures and Safety Recommendations
To avoid such accidents, when purchasing a chair, look for safety certifications such as SGS, TUV, or other relevant domestic or international standard certifications. During use, avoid violent operations and never disassemble the gas pressure rod without authorization. If the chair starts to make hissing sounds or wobbles unsteadily, it is a warning sign that it is about to fail, and you should not take it lightly. When shopping, do not be tempted by low prices; make sure the gas pressure rod has proper certification and prioritize well-known brands with good reputations.
