Company Office Chair Standards

Admin October 09, 2026

The standards for company office chairs cover seat dimensions, height, backrest, and other key design details, requiring a combination of ergonomics and national standards (GB/T 14531 - 2017) for selection.

1. Seat Dimensions
Seat width directly affects comfort. Fixed-width office chairs typically have a seat width of 40 to 45 centimeters, but adjustable models are recommended, with a width range expandable to 38 to 48 centimeters to accommodate users of different body types. Seat depth should ensure full support for the buttocks, avoiding situations where the buttocks are left hanging due to insufficient depth or pressure on the back of the thighs due to excessive depth.

2. Height Adjustment
According to national standards, the seat height range for office chairs should be 40 to 50 centimeters. Adjustment should meet two core conditions:

  • Feet flat on the ground: After sitting down, the thighs and calves should be in a naturally bent state, with the soles of the feet fully in contact with the ground. If the feet cannot touch the ground, a footrest should be used; if the front edge of the chair presses against the thighs, the seat height should be raised.
  • Palm easily inserted under the thighs: This standard is used to determine whether the seat height matches the desk. Typically, the vertical drop between the chair surface and the desk should be maintained at 25 to 30 centimeters, allowing the arms to hang naturally with the elbows at a 90-degree angle, reducing shoulder and neck fatigue.
Additionally, male users, who are generally taller on average, are advised to choose models with a seat height of 41 to 43 centimeters.

3. Backrest Design
The backrest should provide lumbar support to maintain the natural curve of the spine. Special models (such as chairs with headrests) can reach a total height of 120 centimeters, suitable for users who need neck support. The connecting steel plate of split-type backrests should be 6 to 8 millimeters thick to ensure structural stability. The height of the backrest should cover the lumbar to thoracic regions, and the closer the fit to the back, the better the support effect.

4. Other Key Details

  • Seat width and freedom of movement: The seat width should allow users to freely adjust their sitting posture, avoiding restrictions on movement due to excessive narrowness.
  • Backrest support: The backrest should be able to 'support' the lower back (i.e., the 3rd to 5th lumbar vertebrae), preventing the waist from hanging in the air during prolonged sitting.
  • Material and durability: The seat material should be breathable and wear-resistant, and metal components (such as five-star bases and gas lifts) should pass safety certifications to avoid tipping due to insufficient load-bearing capacity.

The selection of office chairs should be based on specific usage scenarios and user body types, prioritizing reference to the dimensions and safety requirements in the national standard (GB/T 14531 - 2017) to ensure long-term health and comfort in use.
