Common Office Chair Dimensions

Admin October 09, 2026

The following are the common dimension ranges for office chairs, with each part designed to balance ergonomics and usage scenarios:

1. Seat Height Seat height is a core parameter affecting sitting comfort, typically designed between 40 cm and 50 cm. This range accommodates the natural leg-bending needs of people of different heights: when feet are flat on the ground, thighs and calves should form an approximately 90ยฐ angle to avoid leg suspension or compression due to improper height. Some high-end office chairs are equipped with pneumatic height adjustment mechanisms, allowing users to flexibly adjust within the 40-50 cm range according to actual needs to match office desks of different heights (standard desk height is approximately 72-76 cm).

2. Seat Width Seat width should ensure sufficient support for the hips and both sides of the thighs while avoiding overly loose sitting postures. Fixed-width office chairs usually have a width of 40 cm to 45 cm, while adjustable models offer a wider design range, up to 38 cm to 48 cm. For users with wider body types or those who need to frequently move sideways, adjustable-width models are recommended to reduce localized pressure during long-term use.

3. Seat Depth Seat depth directly affects the fit between the lower back and the seat surface, with a standard range of 35 cm to 45 cm, of which 40-45 cm is more common. Proper depth should allow the back to fully contact the backrest when sitting, with a gap of about 2-3 finger widths between the back of the knees and the front edge of the seat to avoid excessive pressure on the blood vessels behind the thighs from an overly long seat or lower back suspension from an overly short seat.

4. Backrest Height Backrest height should be designed differently according to usage scenarios and support needs:

  • Medium-height backrest office chairs: The backrest height usually does not exceed the waist level, covering the lumbar region to the scapular area, suitable for daily office scenarios, providing basic lumbar support;
  • Executive office chairs: The backrest height may extend to the head or neck, providing full back support, suitable for long meetings or scenarios requiring reclining for rest. The overall backrest height range is generally 40 cm to 55 cm, and it should be selected according to the user's height to ensure that the top of the backrest aligns with the lower edge of the scapulae.

5. Armrest Height Armrest height should be coordinated with desk height to avoid arm suspension or excessive shoulder shrugging. The standard design range is 22 cm to 28 cm. When adjusting, the surface of the armrests should be level with the position of the elbows when hanging naturally to keep the forearms parallel to the desk and reduce wrist and shoulder fatigue. Some swivel armrests can also adapt to different operating postures (such as typing or reading), further enhancing comfort.
