Chair Size for Office Chairs

Admin October 11, 2026

The common size ranges for office chairs are as follows, and selection should be based on ergonomics and usage scenarios:

1. Seat Size The standard seat width of an office chair is typically 40-45 centimeters, which can meet the buttock support needs of most adults. For greater adaptability, it is recommended to choose a model with an adjustable seat width, usually ranging from 38-48 centimeters. This design can accommodate users of different body types; for example, slimmer individuals can narrow the seat to avoid suspension, while wider individuals can widen it to distribute pressure. Although the seat depth (front-to-back distance) is not explicitly mentioned in the reference information, it is generally recommended to choose a size that supports two-thirds of the thigh length to avoid pressing on the blood vessels behind the knees if the seat is too deep, or causing the thighs to hang if the seat is too shallow.

2. Overall Height According to national standards, the overall height range of an office chair is 40-50 centimeters. This measurement refers to the vertical distance from the ground to the seat surface and should be considered in conjunction with the desk height. For example, if the desk height is 75 centimeters, following the principle of maintaining a 25-30 centimeter drop between the chair surface and the desk surface, the chair height should be adjusted to 45-50 centimeters. At this height, the user's elbows can naturally bend at 90 degrees, and the shoulders do not need to be excessively raised when the arms are placed flat on the desk, reducing shoulder and neck fatigue over long-term use.

3. Flexibility in Height Adjustment It is advisable to choose an office chair that supports gas lift adjustment, as its height adjustment range usually covers the national standard interval (40-50 centimeters) and allows for stepless adjustment via a gas spring to accommodate users of different heights (e.g., 150-190 centimeters). When adjusting, note that after sitting down, both feet should be able to rest flat on the ground with the thighs parallel to the ground; if the chair surface is too high and causes the feet to hang, a footrest should be used to avoid fatigue caused by continuous exertion of the leg muscles.

4. Drop Between Chair Surface and Desk Surface A 25-30 centimeter drop is a core ergonomic parameter. If the chair surface is too high (a drop of less than 25 centimeters), the user will need to raise their arms to operate the keyboard, which can lead to shoulder pain; if the chair surface is too low (a drop of more than 30 centimeters), the user will unconsciously lean forward, increasing pressure on the lumbar spine. It is recommended to calculate the chair height based on the desk height in reverse; for example, if the desk is 70 centimeters high, the chair height should be adjusted to 40-45 centimeters.
