Chair Office Chair Jam

Admin October 09, 2026

Targeted solutions can be adopted for jammed office chairs depending on different situations:

I. The office chair cannot return to the upright position after lying flat

  1. Safety inspection and environment cleaning: Place the chair on a flat surface and focus on cleaning foreign objects at the bottom of the backrest pivot, and the junction between the seat and the chassis to prevent foreign objects from obstructing the movement of mechanical structures.
  2. Correct operation of the control lever: Locate the control lever under the seat, pull it out completely with force and hold it. After the backrest automatically springs back to the upright position, push the control lever back into the fixing hole.
  3. Manual assisted reset and check the spring tension: If the backrest still cannot spring back, manually assist in pushing it back and feel whether there is abnormal resistance during the reset process. If the spring is weak, it may be due to long-term use causing a loss of elasticity, and the spring needs to be replaced.
  4. Simple maintenance: If the operation is stiff, apply lubricant to the connecting shaft of the control lever and the chassis to reduce friction between mechanical components.

II. The casters/rollers are jammed

  1. Remove the casters: Use two large flat-head screwdrivers, insert them from both sides of the caster wheel as close to the axle as possible, and pry evenly to the sides to make the snap ring that fixes the caster exit.
  2. Clean foreign objects: Pull out the caster along with the axle from the axle sleeve and thoroughly clean foreign objects such as hair and fibers wrapped around the axle and the wheel.
  3. Reinstall and test: After cleaning, reinstall the caster, ensure that the snap ring is fully snapped into place, and turn the chair over to test whether the movement is restored smoothly.

III. The height adjustment function fails

  1. Check the locking mechanism: Check the adjusting handle or knob at the bottom of the chair and try to loosen it to release the locked state.
  2. Determine the fault of the gas cylinder: If the internal seal ring of the gas cylinder is worn, nitrogen leaks, or is damaged, the height adjustment function will fail, and the entire gas cylinder needs to be replaced.
  3. Handle oil cylinder air leakage: If the chair cannot be lowered, drop one or two drops of engine oil around the air release button at the top of the oil cylinder to enhance the sealing performance.

IV. The rotation is inflexible or makes abnormal noises If the chair makes a dry sound or makes noises when rotating, it is mostly due to a lack of lubrication in the turntable track below the chassis. Apply an appropriate amount of silicone-based grease or white lithium-based grease and repeatedly rotate the seat to distribute it evenly.
