Can the Gas Spring of an Office Chair Be Repaired?

Admin October 08, 2026

The gas spring of an office chair can be repaired, usually by replacing it with a new one to resolve the malfunction. As the core component for adjusting the seat height of an office chair, its failures are mostly caused by aging of internal seals, gas leakage from the gas spring, or valve failure. Directly repairing the internal structure is costly and technically challenging, so replacing the gas spring with a new one is a more efficient and safe solution. Here are the specific operation steps and precautions:

I. Repair Steps

  1. Confirm the Cause of the Failure
First, check whether the gas spring is leaking (the seat cannot maintain its height after pressing the lift button), whether the valve is malfunctioning (the lift is jerky or completely unadjustable), or whether the rod body is deformed (such as surface dents or cracks). If there is oil on the surface of the gas spring or a hissing sound when pressed, it usually indicates gas leakage.

  2. Purchase a Compatible Gas Spring
Select a model based on the size (such as diameter and stroke length) and load-bearing requirements of the original gas spring. Prioritize products with SGS, TUV, or BIFMA certifications. These certifications indicate that the gas spring has passed safety tests such as pressure resistance and fatigue resistance, reducing the risk of explosion. For example, for ordinary office chairs, it is recommended to choose a Class 3 or Class 4 gas spring (load-bearing capacity โ‰ฅ 100kg).

  3. Remove the Old Gas Spring
Turn the office chair upside down and use a wrench or screwdriver to remove the fixing screws at the connection between the seat and the gas spring (some models may require removing the base first). If the gas spring is too tightly fixed to the five-star base, you can lightly tap the top of the gas spring with a rubber mallet to loosen it. Do not tap the middle button or the rod body of the gas spring to avoid damaging the internal structure.

  4. Install the New Gas Spring
Insert the new gas spring into the center hole of the five-star base, ensuring a complete fit. Align the seat base with the top of the gas spring and fix it with screws and tighten them. After installation, test the lift function: press the lift button continuously more than 10 times to check whether the seat lifts smoothly and without abnormal noise.

  5. Adjust and Test
Adjust the seat height to a comfortable position according to your usage habits and check whether the locking function of the gas spring is normal (the seat should remain at a fixed height after pressing the button). If the lift is not smooth, check whether there is debris or installation deviation at the connection between the base and the gas spring.

II. Precautions

  • Safety First: Wear gloves during repair to avoid being scratched by metal parts. If the gas spring has severe gas leakage or deformation, it is recommended to replace it directly rather than attempting to repair it to prevent sudden dropping or explosion during use.
  • Choose a Regular Channel: When purchasing a gas spring, confirm the merchant's qualifications to avoid using unbranded products. For some brand office chairs (such as Herman Miller and Okamura), original accessories should be used to ensure compatibility.
  • Regular Maintenance: It is recommended to check the sealing of the gas spring every 1-2 years. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or heavy pressure (such as standing on the seat) to extend its service life.

By following standard operations, replacing the gas spring can restore the lift function of the office chair, and the cost is usually lower than replacing the entire chair. If you are not familiar with the disassembly steps, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician or the brand's after-sales service for handling.
