Back Support of Office Chair

Admin October 16, 2026

The adjustment and optimization of the back support of an office chair should be carried out by selecting appropriate methods based on the chair's type and functions, mainly falling into three categories: basic adjustments, ergonomic design adaptations, and supplementary accessories.

I. Using Basic Adjustment Functions

Mid-range and above office chairs are usually equipped with a recline adjustment system, with the core function of controlling the tilt angle and resilience of the chair back.

  • Lever System: There is an adjustment lever beneath the seat. To operate, first locate the lever (usually on the right side), push it forward or pull it backward to unlock the recline function. After adjusting to the desired angle, operate the lever again to lock the position. For example, some chairs support multi-position locking from 120ยฐ to 155ยฐ, allowing users to switch according to their office or rest needs.
  • Knob System: Adjust the recline resistance by rotating the knob beneath the chair back clockwise or counterclockwise. Rotating clockwise increases the resistance, suitable for users with a heavier weight or those who need a fixed sitting posture; rotating counterclockwise decreases the resistance, facilitating easy reclining. Some high-end models (such as certain Herman Miller series) also support segmented adjustments, allowing separate control of the support strength for the upper body and waist areas.
  • Linked Adjustment: Some chairs (such as the JD.COM Z5Pro) support vertical adjustment of the chair back and link it with the position of the lumbar support. When adjusting, simultaneously operate the height adjustment lever of the chair back and the fixing buckle of the lumbar support to ensure that the lumbar support always fits the lumbar curve. This design is suitable for users with significant height differences, but attention should be paid to the matching of the headrest and the cervical spine (for example, the headrest of the Z5Pro cannot be adjusted forward or backward, and the cervical spine support may be insufficient when reclining. It is recommended that users with a height of 1.55-1.7 meters give priority to this model).

II. Adapting to Ergonomic Support Designs

High-end ergonomic chairs provide dynamic support through structural optimization and require adjustments in use according to their design features.

  • Full-Support Arc Design: For example, the 8H Lumbar Support Series has 18 lumbar protrusions in the middle of the chair back, forming a continuous massage support surface; the height of the lumbar pressure relief areas on both sides reaches 35CM, relieving waist fatigue by physically dispersing pressure. When using, ensure that the back is fully in contact with the chair back to avoid support failure due to suspension.
  • Memory Foam Core Adaptation: BASF 50D high-weight memory foam combines softness and resilience, dynamically fitting the lumbar curve. Users with a lighter weight may need to reduce the recline angle to avoid excessive sinking, while users with a heavier weight may need to increase the resistance or choose a model with a higher-density core.

III. Supplementing with Additional Support Accessories

If the original chair's support is insufficient, the experience can be optimized by adding accessories.

  • Installation of a Dedicated Lumbar Support: For example, the 8H Lumbar Support is fixed to the chair back with elastic buckles and is suitable for office chairs with a width of 40-60CM. When installing, align the buckles with the crossbar of the chair back and adjust to the position corresponding to the lumbar spine (usually one-third down from the top of the chair back). The outer cover is made of antibacterial bamboo cotton fabric, and the inner cover is made of CLEANCOOL antibacterial fiber, supporting removable washing and having an antibacterial rate of over 65%, suitable for long-term use.
  • Principles for Selecting Accessories: Give priority to accessories that are compatible with the original chair's material (for example, memory foam lumbar supports are suitable for mesh chair backs, and hard plastic lumbar supports are suitable for leather chair backs) to avoid damage to the chair surface due to friction.

**When adjusting, ensure that the chair's center of gravity is stable to avoid tipping over due to excessive recline angles. If there is insufficient support or excessive pressure, it is recommended to readjust or replace the accessories according to height and weight parameters.
