Back Coolness of Office Chairs

Admin October 10, 2026

Back coolness of office chairs can be caused by various factors from both traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine perspectives, requiring targeted treatment based on the specific cause.

I. Possible Causes and Manifestations from a TCM Perspective

  1. Exogenous Cold Pathogen Type
Prolonged exposure to cold environments such as air-conditioned rooms allows cold pathogens to invade the body through pores, leading to a cool sensation in the back. This condition is often temporary and can be relieved by leaving the cold environment and enhancing warmth (e.g., wearing a coat, increasing the air-conditioning temperature).

  2. Impaired Blood and Qi Circulation Type
Prolonged sitting leads to long-term tension in the back muscles, obstructing blood flow. The cool area is concentrated from below the shoulder blades to above the waist, with possible palpable hard lumps upon pressure. The cool sensation diminishes after activity or sweating.

  3. Yang Deficiency Type
The body inherently lacks yang energy, making it difficult to warm the back even in warm environments. This is often accompanied by cold hands and feet, diarrhea after drinking cold water, loose stools, and fatigue during exercise.

  4. Emotional Qi Stagnation Type
Long-term stress, anxiety, or suppressed emotions lead to qi stagnation, preventing yang energy from reaching the back through meridians. This manifests as a localized cool sensation, possibly accompanied by chest tightness.

II. Possible Causes from a Western Medicine Perspective

  1. Circulatory Disorders
Prolonged sitting or chronic sleep deprivation slows blood circulation, particularly reducing blood supply to the back area and causing a cool sensation.

  2. Environmental and Clothing Factors
Low ambient temperature or insufficient clothing leads to heat loss, a normal physiological phenomenon that can be improved by adding layers of clothing.

III. Daily Management and Remedies

  1. Emergency Measures

    • Warm Compress on Acupoints: Apply a warm water bag (40-50โ„ƒ) over thin clothing to the back heart area (below the center point of the shoulder blade line) for 15 minutes each time; or use a hairdryer on the warm setting, maintaining a 10-centimeter distance and moving along the bladder meridian to avoid overheating.
    • Promote Circulation Through Activity: Take breaks during work to move around and avoid prolonged sitting in the same position.
  2. Lifestyle Adjustments

    • Reduce time spent in air-conditioned rooms, increase the temperature, or wear a coat; ensure adequate sleep and avoid disrupting endocrine balance through late nights.
    • Those with a cold-prone constitution should keep their backs warm (e.g., wearing a thermal vest); those with yang deficiency should consume warm foods like lamb and longan.
  3. Home Remedies

    • Moxibustion: Apply moxibustion for 15 minutes to the Dazhui acupoint (below the prominent bone at the back of the neck) and the Zhiyang acupoint (below the shoulder blades), maintaining an appropriate distance to prevent burns.
    • Dietary Therapy: Those with a cold-prone constitution can drink ginger and brown sugar water to expel cold; those with yang deficiency are recommended to consume angelica, ginger, and lamb soup to warm and nourish yang energy.
