There are two major incidents involving Amazon office chairs: the removal of non-compliant office chairs and the recall of Amazon Basics office chairs with safety hazards.
Amazon and Temu Remove Office Chairs Not Meeting EN1335 - 1 - 2 - 3 Standards
Recently, Amazon and Temu have removed office chairs that do not meet the EN1335 - 1 - 2 - 3 standards from their platforms. EN1335 - 1 - 2 - 3 is a series of technical specifications for office chairs, with the third part focusing on dynamic stability testing, especially the anti-tipping ability of lift-and-swivel chairs when tilted or rotated. This standard is formulated to ensure the safety of office chairs during use and prevent accidents caused by unstable chairs. The removal measure is related to the compliance requirements for lift-and-swivel chairs and the logic of preparing the Declaration of Conformity (DoC). This means that for the relevant office chairs to be relisted for sale, they must meet the standard and prepare a DoC in accordance with regulations to ensure product compliance with safety standards.
Amazon Recalls 11,400 Amazon Basics Office Chairs
The recall is due to the possibility of chair legs breaking, posing a risk of users falling and getting injured. The recalled office chairs come in three colors: black, brown, and white. They are equipped with wheels and padded armrests, and the seat height and backrest tilt are adjustable. Only chairs with black plastic parts at the bottom of the wheels are included in the recall. Amazon has received 13 reports of chair leg breakage, with one case resulting in a minor shoulder injury to the user. The affected products were sold on Amazon's US site from September 2021 to April 2022, with prices ranging from $103 to $170. Approximately 11,400 units have been sold, all manufactured in China. Amazon requires purchasers to immediately stop using the recalled products and contact them through official channels to obtain instructions for a full refund. Purchasers need to upload photos of the destroyed chairs. After verification, the refund will be issued to their Amazon wallet account or returned in the form of an Amazon gift card. At the same time, Amazon is contacting all known consumers through purchase records to safeguard consumer rights and safety.
