Converting a Wooden Office Chair to Casters

Admin October 08, 2026

Converting a wooden office chair to casters can be accomplished through the following steps, with the appropriate solution selected based on the chair leg structure:

I. Material Preparation and Compatibility Check

  1. Caster Selection: Prioritize silent rubber casters with self-tapping screws, ensuring each caster can bear a load of โ‰ฅ40kg. If the chair legs are metal, prepare additional matching screws; for wooden legs, the self-tapping screws can be directly fixed.
  2. Tool Preparation: A Phillips or flat-head screwdriver (depending on the type of self-tapping screw), a tape measure (for measuring the distance between chair legs), and a soft cloth (to pad the working surface and prevent scratches).
  3. Structural Compatibility: Check if the bottom of the chair legs is flat. For wooden structures without pre-drilled holes, choose stem-mounted casters; for metal or pre-drilled hole structures, self-tapping screw-mounted casters can be selected.

II. Removing Existing Components

  1. Invert the Chair: Turn the chair upside down with the legs facing up, and pad it with a soft cloth to protect the surface.
  2. Remove Original Plastic Pads: Use a screwdriver to rotate counterclockwise and remove the self-tapping screws, keeping the screws (ignore if the casters come with their own screws).

III. Installing the Casters

  1. Locate Installation Points: Use a tape measure to measure the four corners at the bottom of the chair legs and mark the center positions of the casters, ensuring the four wheels are arranged in a rectangular pattern to avoid offset and wobbling.
  2. Secure the Casters:
    • Self-Tapping Screw Mounting: Align the center hole of the caster with the marked point, insert the self-tapping screw vertically, and rotate it clockwise until the base is flush with the chair leg. If the chair leg is hard metal, drill a hole (with a diameter slightly smaller than the screw) before fixing; for soft wood, it can be directly penetrated.
    • Stem Mounting: Drill a vertical hole (with a diameter matching the stem) at the bottom of the chair leg, align the stem of the caster with the hole, and press it down vertically with force until a "click" sound is heard, confirming that the spring clip is locked.
  3. Check for Tightness: Gently shake the wheels to confirm there is no looseness, and tighten all fixing screws.

IV. Testing and Adjustment

  1. No-Load Test: After standing the chair upright, gently push it to observe if the movement is smooth and the steering is flexible.
  2. Load Test: Sit on the chair and move it slowly to check the load-bearing stability. If there is any stuttering or abnormal noise, re-tighten the screws or replace the wheels.
  3. Fine-Tune Position: If the chair moves off-center, adjust the installation angle of the wheels or replace them with wheels that distribute the load more evenly.

V. Usage Precautions

  1. Floor Requirements: Avoid using on uneven or slippery floors to prevent the wheels from getting stuck or slipping.
  2. Regular Maintenance: Check the wear of the wheels monthly, replace aging components in a timely manner, and ensure that the self-tapping screws or stems are not loose.
