Wooden Office Chair Reupholstery

Admin October 12, 2026

The reupholstery of a wooden office chair can be carried out following these steps:

Preparation

  • Assess the frame: Check whether the wooden frame of the swivel chair is sturdy, with no looseness or damage, ensuring that it can withstand subsequent operations and the weight of the new leather.
  • Observe the fastening method: Examine how the old leather is fastened. Common methods include screws, plastic clips, staples fixed by a staple gun, or direct gluing with adhesive. This helps with subsequent disassembly.
  • Prepare tools and materials: Get ready with screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, utility knives, tape measures, staple guns, cordless drills (if re-drilling is required), hair dryers, gloves, new leather, adhesives (such as sofa spray adhesive), fillers (optional, like high-density foam), fasteners (staples, wood screws), and auxiliary materials (double-sided tape, clean cloths).

Safe Disassembly of the Old Leather

  • Adjust the working angle: Invert the chair or adjust it to a convenient working angle to locate all the points where the old leather is fastened.
  • Remove the fasteners: Use the corresponding tools to carefully remove screws, clips, and other fasteners. For areas glued tightly, use the hot air from a hair dryer to soften the adhesive before carefully peeling off the old leather.
  • Clean the chair frame: Clean the wooden chair frame to ensure it is clean, dry, and flat, with no residual adhesive blocks or old nails, preparing it for subsequent upholstery.

Precise Measurement and Cutting of the New Leather

  • Measure the dimensions: Use a tape measure to carefully measure the dimensions of the seat cushion and backrest, including length and width, ensuring accurate measurements.
  • Cut the leather: Cut the new leather according to the measurements, leaving some allowance to avoid running out of leather due to cutting errors.

Upholstery Application

  • Secure the foam: If the chair's foam is sagging, first secure the new foam to the chair frame.
  • Secure the leather: Align the cut new leather in position, flatten it from the center to the sides, and use a staple gun to fix it with a staple every 2 - 3 centimeters on the back of the frame.
  • Handle the corners: When encountering corners, fold the leather into pleats or make small cuts before stapling to ensure flatness.
  • Flatten the staples: Use a hammer to flatten the staples and check if any are protruding to avoid skin scratches.

Edge Finishing

The lower edge of the seat and the bottom of the backrest should be finished with staples. Exposed staple heads can be covered with leather patches of the same color to enhance the chair's appearance.

Personalized Adjustments

After refurbishment, the chair can be adjusted according to personal needs, such as adding a layer of memory foam to the seat cushion to improve comfort.
