Wooden Office Chair Modification

Admin October 11, 2026

The repair and modification of the armrest surface of a wooden office chair can be carried out according to the following steps, which can effectively enhance its texture and practicality:

1. Tool and Material Preparation
Prepare in advance rosewood offcuts (or other hardwoods), a coping saw/handsaw, a hand plane, sandpaper (a combination of coarse and fine grits), screwdrivers, a utility knife, pencils, wood wax oil or eco-friendly paint, wood glue, woodworking clamps, etc. Rosewood offcuts provide natural texture and durability, while wood wax oil enhances the warm texture of the wood. The choice of tools should match the hardness of the wood.

2. Disassembly of the Armrest Structure
Use a screwdriver to carefully disassemble the armrest surface, with a focus on protecting the armrest surface support plate (usually made of metal or plastic). If the support plate is tightly fixed to the wood, you can first use a hot air gun to heat and soften the glue before separating them, avoiding violent disassembly that could deform the support plate.

3. Model Making and Wood Cutting

  • Lay the old armrest surface flat on thick cardboard, trace its thickness outline with a pencil, and cut out an accurate paper model with a utility knife.
  • Cover the paper model on the rosewood offcuts and mark the cutting lines with a pencil. When using a coping saw to cut along the marked lines, keep the saw blade vertical to avoid burrs on the wood edges.
  • After cutting, use coarse sandpaper (80-120 grit) to initially sand the cut edges and remove wood splinters.

4. Wood Assembly and Fixing

  • Place the cut wood pieces in the designed order on the woodworking table, and evenly apply wood glue on the sides (white glue or isinglass glue is recommended).
  • Use woodworking clamps to clamp the joint from multiple directions and keep it stationary for 24 hours to ensure the glue is fully cured. Pay attention to the alignment of the wood pieces in this step to avoid misalignment of the joint surfaces.

5. Shape Making and Detail Processing

  • After the joint surface is dry, use a small hand plane to flatten the back, and use coarse sandpaper to sandๅ‡น้ข (concave areas) until flat.
  • Cover the old support plate on the new wood surface, mark the outline with a pencil, and cut out the final shape with a coping saw. Leave a 1-2mm margin when cutting for subsequent fine trimming.
  • Use a half-round file to process the edge radius to enhance grip comfort.

6. Surface Treatment and Installation

  • Sand the surface in stages with 120-grit, 240-grit, and 400-grit sandpaper, with a focus on treating the joint seams and cut edges.
  • After cleaning the wood surface, evenly apply wood wax oil (or thinly spray eco-friendly paint), polish with a cotton cloth after the first layer is dry, and repeat 2-3 times to enhance protection.
  • Finally, align the armrest surface with the support plate, fix it to the original chair frame with screws, and check for smooth opening and closing.

Key Tips: If you lack woodworking experience, you can first practice cutting and joining with scrap wood; rosewood offcuts should be dried in advance to avoid later deformation; choose colorless wood wax oil to retain the natural texture of the wood.
